I have a set of Nordstrand 70's wind single coils in my J05.

I previously had Lakland SC's in there.

The Nordy''s are bright and lively.
They sound very much like Marcus Miller.
They have the best slap, pop, tap tone.

Clear, ringing, glassy, if you're trying to cop the MM vibe, look no further...

I have a bit of a dilemma. I've been offered a 55-02 fretless (standard, black), ebony 'board, Lakland p'ups and pre, made in Korea.

Trouble is, the price has been set to reflect the fact it's barely been used from new (left the shop 9 months ago, left the factory ?) ... and for what I'm being asked, I could (just about) buy a s/h fretted 55-02 and pay to get the 'board replaced with ebony (unlined). There's also a chance that by doing that I'll finish up with a bass with Barts, and I think (based on how much I like my bart-equipped 55-94, and on recent conversations here) that's more my kind of bass.

Think I may have to pass on it ... :hmm:

The Fralins, to me, embody that '60s J tone just about perfectly. The single-coil Chis, in comparison, sound thicker (halfway between a J and a P, if that makes any sense) and grindier with more mids. I don't think I can speak too knowledgeably on the Lakland/Hanson J pickups. A little more "modern", maybe a little more '70s J-sounding? Please note the word "little" being used twice. I don't think they'll be confused with humcancelling Sadowskys anytime soon.:D .

I didn't mention how I felt about the sound of the pickups that I knew deliberately, not to interfere, but I agree with you on many levels

thanks! what did the Laklands sound like before? what was the reason you dumped them for?

you can hardly use the number of a US (unlike Skyline) bass to tell the exact production date, they have quite a system. Sometimes you may have to email Lakland
There's a pdf s/n sheet on their site tho, take a look.

There are three things that I know to know the newer barts from the old ones. The older ones were installed until late 2001 (mine is a late 2001 and still had them). The finish of the casings of the two pickups was different to the eye and to the touch, the bridge pup feeling like more "worn in" than the neck one. The logo on the two was made in a different manner too (like, one pressed in, the other sticking out), making it look as if the pickups came from different batches.

that's a decision.

I don't think board replacement is something I'd usually go for with Lakland that didn't have any neck problems. Skyline necks can be bought from Lakland , price to be expected is about $250. I don't remember if Skylines have the ebony unlined option though.
Used Barts for the -94/-02 sometimes can be found in the classified section at $100-150
A MIK Skyline has to be pre- september '08, BTW

Hm. IIRC, mine was $1260 in Canadian dollars, but that was after $120 I had them take off due to a small chip in the paint. At that point, I was looking at US$1000 to get in on the early-bird price. The SKB case at that point was (I think) something like US$175, plus another $25 or so for the strap. I was also assuming that, since they were taking chwques directly for the LOG bass, I'd have to deal with the usual UPS border gouge, which can sometimes reach the value of the shipped item. Now, there, my assumption might have been off; I'm willing to take the lumps on that one if I was, indeed, mistaken. But after the LOGger special is over, the price is supposed to go up to about the same as the Fender, but still without the case (am I right in this?).

But I got to leave the store with bass, case, strap and candy in hand, rather than hanging onto the LOG bass's slipping release date. So far, I've been using the P bass and loving every second of it. Would I have enjoyed the LOG bass as much? Holy hell, yeah. The dice just tumbled the other way this time.

All the info helps :) Thanks.

My primary reason for replacing the 'board would be to get an unlined fretless, which is not an option with skyline necks unfortunately (so far as I know). Secondary reason would be to replace rosewood or maple with ebony.

I hadn't thought about used barts ... thanks for that.
