He does not do these reviews just because he is a nice guy (which of course he is). It is his job. He is a columnist at Guitar World magazine. The YouTube videos that you see contain reviews that Guitar World pays him to do. The editors at GW are the ones that decide what gear he will review next. Given the fact that his column is a one page gear review, and not head to head comparisons, it is very unlikely that one day we will see what you're asking for.

The only way I see of getting Ed to review something is to tell the maker company to send their stuff over to GW, and then maybe the editors commission Ed to do a review. A very long shot, but maybe your only one.

As for the review we're talking about, maybe we should tell Premier Guitar to follow GW's lead and hire a true bass player and hopefully an interesting character to review their bass gear.

+1. Though I have to say I'm shocked that Lākland didn't send him the bass to review. The review we saw will likely do nothing to sell the bass in question.

I write reviews as part of my job, so I know about the limited range of choices a reviewer can work under. It can be frustrating.. and sometimes expensive. I can't tell you how many times I've sold myself on something halfway through writing up a review.

...and I'd never dream of half-ar5ing it the way that review of the 44 AJ was done.

Agreed.

I can see a couple of reasons why we haven't seen a review from Guitar World. What if Lakland just didn't realize that Guitar World, through Ed's column and massive YouTube exposure, should be one of their main targets? Or what if Lakland has indeed sent GW the bass and they just put it in the bottom of the queue?

Ian should do a set of clips for the Lakland site, like he has for all the other basses.

Hey I just posted this about my 4-94D that survived hell and back in a car fire 6 years ago in Brad Johnson's "Boutique Road Worn" thread. I figured it would also apply here, so for your viewing pleasure/dismay:

This is Shirley, my only consistent love for the past 9 years.

Here you can see the oxidation on the bridge - the one shiny spot towards the top rear is one the non-oxidized part! The rest is grungy, but I kinda like it.

Here you can see where the top is separated. No, that's not a maple veneer accent line :D. The folks at Lakland cleaned it up and i think put some kind of finish on it to keep it from getting worse.

Look at that headstock! Shameful. Notice the same oxidation on the tuners as well. About a year ago I put a Hipshot D-Tuner on, and didn't replace the ferule because it would look waaaaaaaaaaay too bright next to the other ones.

And here you can see my 'roasted' neck. Ernie Ball owes me royalties I think...

So she's beat to hell, especially for a 'boutique' level instrument. But I love this bass so much because of a) the feel b) the sound and c) all we've been through together. I could never ever sell her. Thanks for looking!

I agree, well said, but just to put the record straight, I wasn't at all stamping my foot like an angry toddler! And demanding that one of the most pro reviewers in the business do what I want. I read the comments under his reviews - I know that he only gets to review what he's given by the editors.

Wishful thinking is all I was going for. Getting a A/B/C of the Fender Marcus Miller, the AJ and the Metro will probably never happen...

Although...

Here in the UK, GuitarGuitar.co.uk is the UK distributor for both Lakland and Sadowsky, and they also stock lots of Fenders...

Hmmmm...perhaps one of our english brothers could sneak a camera into one of their stores?

You'd be a smash hit on youtube for sure :D

In other news...any reviews of the 44-51 due soon as well?

well...."should" and "gonna" are 2 totally different things from a GAS perspective that is!

as for getting Ed to review it....I know many of you have JP's email address....suggest it to him!

although they are moving this week so it may be a while before he gets around to it...

the review was not "great" but positive for the most part and got me partially pumped...just think if Ed would get it in his magic fingers!!

wow!!! not alot of damage...I would have expected worse...or was it "worse" and fixed?

and it still plays great? what a testimony!

It was worse - it was covered in black soot and the preamp had to be replaced. The hard case also was completely destroyed - it took the brunt of the force of the fire I think. The guys at Lakland were great (of course) and gave me the deluxe cream case for the price of the regular skb style one since they only had that in stock and I was severely poor when I got it fixed up.

And yes, still platys like a dream. The pickups are definitely microphonic now, but I like em that way - a bit more sensitive now if you ask me.
