when you say "Do Laklands sound like a good Fender bass" what do you mean?

The Hanson "vintage series" is a very classic sounding (1960s type) sound whereas the Neos are more "modern sounding".....

what sound do you want??? with Lakland you can choose...ANOTHER great reason to buy a Lakie!!!

Although some may argue to the contrary, in my experience the Lakland P's, especially with the Lindy Fralin pickups, completely nail the vintage Fender P tone that has been heard on so many recordings over the years. The build quality/feel/balance is just better with the Laklands. Maybe I was lucky, but the MIK Bob Glaub I just sold on the LOG was in every way as good or better than any mass-produced MIA/MIM Fender P I have ever played.

As for the question of Fender-sounding Laklands...
The first bass guitar Dan Lakin and Hugh McFarland made was an attempt to combine all the sounds Leo Fender ever made into one bass guitar. A Lakland version of a Leo Fender design is going to nail the sound.

I tell you what I'd like to see though. I've been listening to the Kings of Leon's new album (I think it's called 'come up sunday'?) and the bass sound on that is INCREDIBLE. It's particularly good on a track called 'Pony Up'.

He's using a Gibson Thunderbird running through an Ampeg Heritage SVT full-stack.

Given all the problems Gibson are having at the minute (the guitar salesman in one of Scotland's biggest music shops told me recently that there isn't a single Gibson coming in from the factory that doesn't have a flawed/damaged finish, and that about ONE IN THREE needs a couple of hours with their in-house luthier to set it up so that it's playable!), why don't Lakland start making some Gibson-inspired designs?

It clearly seems to be working for Mike Lull, after all...

BTW, I know Lakland have new stuff coming out all the time nowadays, and a big model catalogue, it just struck me as odd that since their strapline is 'familiar in aesthetics, revolutionary in performance', they don't make a copy of the thunderbird or the SG. They'd definitely be living up to their motto then!

I'll leave sound descriptions up to those more articulate than myself. Here's a quote from cabcreaser as to the sound of the Hollowbody:

"It is more the Jack Casady and Phil Lesh hollowbody sound. Roots music and jam band stuff would suit it perfectly as well as neo soul. IME, it has two great sounds, solo neck pickup and solo humbucker pickup. Splitting the coils and combining the pickups leads to other options that work too, but those two tones are really the bread and butter of this bass. Neck pickup: hofner-y and thumpy; humbucker: like a really thick pbass with added air behind the notes."

As to the maple top and finish. It looks to me like it's a piece of spalted or burled maple. Not an overly "pretty" flamed piece of maple, but with the subtle natural satin finish, I think it's perfect.

I believe I read that the album was recorded with the Ampeg Micro Stack: Micro VR and SVT210AV cab! Pretty awesome. I think the album sounds great.

Hey guys,

I figure I'll get more attention here than in the electronics section...

Last night, after three years, I put new DRs on my 55-02D after finally being able to afford it. So, I string it up; go to plug into my amp and start to play - everything's sounding good (it's nice to finally have new strings)

BUT THEN

*Pop pop* from the speaker and then there's no sound. I figure the battery is gone (since I couldn't remember the last time I replaced it). Sure enough, I pull the volume knob out to bypass the preamp and I have sound coming out of the speaker once again.

Long story short: I've tried a few batteries now, and I can't get any sound when in active mode.

Admittedly, these aren't the freshest batteries (although they test fine), but seeing as today is good friday, all the stores are closed.

Any idea what could be going on? I have a multimeter to diagnose the preamp, but I wouldn't even know where to begin...

Any help would be super appreciated as always.

After 3 years of inactivity in a case it's hard to say. Is there any corrosion in the battery box? Did the old battery leak at all? Did you check the rest of the wiring/soldering for visible faults? Polarity of the battery sounds like a possibility too.

Thanks for the answers guys :hyper:

I've been putting batteries in the right way. It's not that the bass hasn't been used in three years - it's just taken me that long to afford new strings. I use the bass regularly.

There's no corrosion in the battery compartment and when I took off the preamp cover I didn't see anything like loose wires or corrosion.

I know! That's what I'm worried about! I don't have any idea how it could have happened though. I've had another active bass for 13 years and I've never had any problems with it...

I guess I have a "Rev A" LH3 preamp, maybe I can get it replaced with a "Rev D"? I don't have any dough to do that at this point, so I'd like to try to troubleshoot it first if possible.

Uuuummmm...gee...this is embarrassing: for no real good reason I decided to try a different patch chord, and now I've got sound with the preamp engaged - wth?

So, I guess I've got a bad patch, as it only likes my lakland in passive mode?

Does this make any sense?
