I used to have it on the 500 hz setting (default I believe) and never really touched the mid control, but changed it to 250 hz a yr or so ago to give it low end heft without getting too muddy. Maybe i'll try the 850 hz setting to give it more 'chunk' and get the low end from the more-than-capable bass eq.

The reason I was asking was I wasn't sure if the 850 hz was recommended to help the overtones from the lower notes of the 55-94 jump out or just for overall kick-a$$ed-ness.

Quoting myself here because I've been MIA for 12-odd some pages :hiding:

So I've switched my '99 4-94D's mid freq to the 850 hz, and all I can say is WOW. There's the cut I've been looking for.

Played some funk at a tuesday night jam session. Had the rear coil selected of the MM pu, pan 3/4 towards the bridge, bass and mid at about 3 o'clock (looking straight at the bass).

DAyuuuuuuuum. There's the grease-y back pickup bark I wanted. And when I wanted to slap, slight mid cut (very slight), pan to center. Viola! Great stuff. If anyone has the older Bart system like I do I highly recommend giving this a shot.

Now you guys see why I always wondered why folks had issues w/ the old Barts! They just needed to find the 850 setting.

Hm. I think I'd like to either hear a YouTube of Ed Friedland or a TB member. that review made me completely not care about the 44 AJ. I didn't like the sound... or the playing. I'd like to see someone really dial that axe in before I'm willing to get excited over it.

+1 to this. He spent aaaaages talking about the binding. And his opening lines were a bit wierd too - "this bass looks kinda familiar."

It's a jazz. If it doesn't look familiar by now, you're in the wrong job fella...

What I would really LOVE to see is Ed Friedland do a head-to-head comparison between the 44-AJ, the equivalent Sadowsky Metro, and the Fender Markus Miller signature jazz. That would be awesome, since I guess that's the choice most active-jazz players are going to make.

Be interesting to hear how Ed (who has a 44-07 I believe) would rate the LH3 preamp against the Sadowsky preamps in the Metro and the Fender.

And I think that the Skyline 44-AJ may come along just in time to make a lovely graduation present... a Darryl Jones and a 44 (or 55!)-AJ? That should cover anything, shouldn't it? :hiding:

Ed does not own the 44-07 anymore, it was sold about 6 months ago. The only Lakland he owns now is the Scheff.

I will tell him about this thread but here's what he'll say:

He does not do these reviews just because he is a nice guy (which of course he is). It is his job. He is a columnist at Guitar World magazine. The YouTube videos that you see contain reviews that Guitar World pays him to do. The editors at GW are the ones that decide what gear he will review next. Given the fact that his column is a one page gear review, and not head to head comparisons, it is very unlikely that one day we will see what you're asking for.

The only way I see of getting Ed to review something is to tell the maker company to send their stuff over to GW, and then maybe the editors commission Ed to do a review. A very long shot, but maybe your only one.

As for the review we're talking about, maybe we should tell Premier Guitar to follow GW's lead and hire a true bass player and hopefully an interesting character to review their bass gear.
