Jay is a great guy - when I was auditioning my 'dream bass' at NJBGC he let me go back and forth between a lot of nice pieces. I ended up being torn between two different 4-94s. The one that 'felt' the best to me was modded w Bassline pu's and an Aguilar 2-band pre amp, but the other one had the 'sound' with the stock Bart set up. He sent the one that felt better to Lakland to be returned to factory spec, and gave it to me at a lower price (because it was 'modded'). So I got the best of both worlds - sound and feel.
I believe it does have the older, more desirable Bart set up - it's serial# 379 so she was crafted in 1999 according to Lakland.com's serial# [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].
I used to have it on the 500 hz setting (default I believe) and never really touched the mid control, but changed it to 250 hz a yr or so ago to give it low end heft without getting too muddy. Maybe i'll try the 850 hz setting to give it more 'chunk' and get the low end from the more-than-capable bass eq.
The reason I was asking was I wasn't sure if the 850 hz was recommended to help the overtones from the lower notes of the 55-94 jump out or just for overall kick-a$$ed-ness.

I'm not sure what the 'sweet spot' is for the newer Lakland pu setup, but according to the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] on Lakland.com, there isn't an 850 hz setting.
Unless there are some kind of 'hidden settings' I'm unaware of (but somewhat recall hearing about?)
Long story that I don't want to rehash here. What is missing is the matching headstock - it was supposed to match the body, after a lot of discussion I was told it would be completed as ordered, alas it has arrived the way you see it in the Photo.
Ah ok. I did see that bit about the matching headstock, but didn't think that one would be able to order it. The fact that you didn't get what you ordered is disappointing, but you've still got a sweet bass at least

Congrats! The HBs are great. I have one with Dark Stars and I love it. Does yours have Barts or Chis? Got any pics?

The guard on your DJ5CS looks great Ferg, I really like how you've altered the shape. IMO a Jazz bass with a traditional shaped guard and no control plate looks really awkward, but this is definately not the case
I have a 2005 55-94 (barts) and a 2008 55-02 (with Lakies) and they're both set to 250/275 for the same reasons.
That said, the frequencies around 800-1000 need cutting on the Lakie-equipped 55-02 (for my tastes) but that happens elsewhere in the signal chain.

My opinion: the E and B sound more piano-like at 35", and can be used further up the neck without sounding yucky. The A is ok at 35 but better at 34, and I definitely prefer 34" (or shorter) for D & G strings. This is why I messed around w/ Dingwalls for a while, but eventually gave up on trying to get used to the fanned fret obstacles.
I left the Barts in, I thought about the dark Stars but the Barts sound fantastic and give me exactly what I'm looking for. This bass has eased its way into being my main bass. It has every sound I'm looking for either picked or fingered, save for the jazz bass sound. I use Flats on this bass, rounds just didn't do it justice. Haven't found a set of Flats I could commit to, I keep trying new sets. I think DR's are on it now, they sound good but nothing has been ice cream to my ears yet.

Thanks Luke...I consulted with a World Famous Pick-Guard Designer, a real nice "Doude"
with a funny accentI've heard HBs with each type of pickup. To my ears, they're just modestly different flavors of awesome.
Hey, guys. What's the latest on the DJ replacement models? Nothing on the Lakland site about them that I can find. Will they be available in Skyline versions? I seriously regret selling my DJ5...in a serious, heart-wrenching kind of way. I really want to replace that bass ASAP, either with a similar one or one of the new models. If they're going to be US made only, I won't be able to take that plunge.
If anyone has a DJ4 or DJ5 they'd like to part with, please let me know.
