Apologies if this has been asked previously, but I'm thinking about getting my first Lakland and am considering either the 44-02 or the JO 44-60. I'm looking to round out the herd with a "Jazz" tone monster and know I can get that from the 44-60, but I also like the versatility of the 44-02. Can you get a good "Jazz" sound from the 44-02?
It depends on how you like your J tone and how much of a purist you are. Your best bet is to check out the sound clips and compare, if you haven't already.

I agree with what Greg said. Sometimes, the 44/55-02 seems to really nail the jazz tone, and other times it will sound a good bit too refined. It really depends on what you think a J bass tone is. If you like noiseless, humbucking jazz basses, then the 44-02 really gets that going. If you like snarly, fat single coils, then it won't really do that. The video Greg linked is good at making the comparison. What I've found is that sometimes I could get my 44/55-02's to get that close, and I was happy, particularly when recording and listening back to the full mix. Other times, it was way too different for me to even think of it as a jazz bass, such as when playing through a stage rig or listening back through monitors or in-ear systems.
For all my comments above, I'm referring to the use of the coil tap in the rear position to tap that back coil in the MM pickup. If you run it in the center or forward position, it's EXTREMELY different from a jazz bass. That's part of the versatility of the instrument, but as Greg said, if you're a single coil purist and want that burpy, grindy J bass tone, the 44/55-02 will only get you so far, and could leave you underwhelmed.

No problem. I see Jason chimed in with his real-world experience (I'm more into Lakland's P basses, Hollowbodies and Decades). Yeah, it's a tough choice. Given what you have already, it seems like the 44-60 is the way to go. BUT if you want a single bass that can pretty much (arguably, of course) cover all your desired tones on a gig, then the 44-02 is it.

Yes, the standard Fender control plate will fit the 55-60...

Question of the day...does anyone have a bound/blocked Duck Dunn/Bob Glaub that has a 1 3/4" neck?
Some of you guys know where I'm going with this....
...Out of the 4 basses I currently own, I play my Black Beauty USA CUSTOM Duck Dunn the least simply because of the neck width. Honestly, I haven't seen it out of it's case in over three months now, yet, I've played several gigs with either my '68 Telecaster bass, '87 MIJ 1951 P reissue, or my homemade Pino Palladino copy made with Squier parts of all things....they're all mediocre basses compared to my Lakland, but I can play an entire gig with them without cramping up because they all have nice wide necks. I can't even finish a set with my Duck...the neck is just too narrow at the nut.
....I feel guilt-ridden every time I gripe on here because I thought this bass would be the bass of all basses, and Duck Dunn is my hero. Dan Lakin signed and dated the back of the headstock of the bass, and it looks and sounds like no other bass...
BLEH. Sorry for bi__ing. I just don't know what to do. I've put it on the "for trade/sale" block a couple times just to take it back, but I don't want a $3.5K bass just to sit in a case all its life.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be helpful and greatly appreciated!

Dang, that's a tough one, Shadi. I'm a P bass guy and live near Lakland, so I've seen a lot of Glaubs and Dunns in person and pay special attention to them online. In my experience, most people who order the US models go for the 1.5" neck. And those who choose 1.75" usually go for a more traditional look--sunburst or oly white with a tort guard and "plain" rosewood--rather than something with blocks and binding.
Maybe your best bet would be to try and sell or trade your neck to someone who is considering buying a used US Glaub that has a 1.75" neck.
I've come to realize that a 1.5" neck is not ideal for me either, being a big guy (6'5"). But I can play my shoreline gold Glaub (maple board, ebony blocks) with a skinny neck--maybe even under 1.5"--for 1-2 hours without cramping as long as I don't spend too much time on the first couple frets. Plus, it's so resonant and light, I can't see ever getting rid of it.

Option #1:
OK...sell one of those basses or two...order the 44-51 neck for your body(you will LOVE it as I have large mitts and it fits like a glove)
Sell old neck and buy another bass like you sold, if you can even put down the Glaub with the new neck. You will loose blocks, but you will gain P bass bliss.
Option #2:
Sell Glaub, order one with a wider neck
Option #3:
Send bass to me. As stated in option one, I have large appendages, and love the 44-51 neck, and the 1.75" neck, but have no problem with my 1.5" necks either.

Anyone travel with their Lakland here? I just got the freebie gig bag when I bought my 55-01 and I realize that I want to bring it along to a gig far away in Dallas.
Does the hardshell case do the job for travel? Does one really have to check your bass <cringe> vs carry-on?

I still see lots of geetars brought onboard in gig bags, but if you have a case, I think the do make you check it. I understand completely about the cringe thing. I remember that you-tube song about the guy whose guitar was destroyed by United Airlines. cold stuff that.
