The Elixirs are part of a 'trial' thing that I got to participate in. I haven't had a chance to really test them for any amount of time, so I need to put them on something...

Just got my 3 tone sunburst JO5 skyline with maple neck from Saluki! :bassist::bassist: A GAS killer for sure! The J Retro in it is ridiculous! Pics sure to come!

Also, theres a guy by St Paul, MN selling two skyline JO5's. One is red with maple neck, the other is black w/RW and J Retro. I was about to buy one before I saw mine on here. Heres the red one [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I've got a Skyline DJSonic but am beginning to think (maybe it's just me) that the ChiSonic single coils are a bit thin sounding. I'm contemplating swapping in some Fralins but not sure if this will work as it appears the route for the Chi covers is larger than a standard J p'up route. Will new pickups work under the covers or are the Chi's attached to the chrome covers? Basically can I swap pickups and if so how easy or difficult will it be?

I believe the Chi's are one with the housing. It's not a cover. I know that replacing standard Jazz Pickups with Chi-Sonics requires routing, so my guess is that you will not be able to drop Fralins in without gaps unless you make a new pickguard that covers up both pickups.

That's what I suspected. But let me ask this because it could be other parts of my signal chain; those who have compared Chi Singles in similar J style basses to more traditional pickups, would you say the Chi's sounded "thinner" or more "brittle" with less low end going on and more up top? This is something that's been bugging me for a while and i've gone through several amps and cabs over the last few years and the one constant has been my bass...

I have a 55-60 w/Hansons and a custom bass w/Chi's. I've had basses w/Chi singles as well. I find the Hansons to have more 'sizzle' in the highs, and the Chi's to be more pronounced in the mids. The Chi's, to my ears anyway, have their 'voice', which is fantastic. The Hansons seem to offer more tonal versatility, but don't give me that same sound as the Chi's.

Personally I love the tone from the Chi's on my custom (semi hollow Mahogany w/flats) slightly over-driven with the neck pup favored a tad and the tone rolled off to just past mid. But again, I'm looking for a different, darker, vintage-y tone from them, not a snappy slappy one.

And one more thing: I have mine wired V/T V/T, so that I can control the tone on each pickup individually. That really helps get a thump without getting muddy IMHO.

Not a knock on the bass or pups, but I also once had a DJ4, this one had the more traditional Hanson vintage J pickups, which were just not my cup of tea either. Sounded "thin" to me too. I eventually sold it and figured I just prefer the active jazz platform. My active Scheff and 44-01 are more along the lines of what I prefer. That's why they make different kinds, right? Vive la difference.

Very interesting. I recently sold my USJO with Fralins and kept my USJO with single-coil Chi-sonics--primarily because I find the Chis fatter-sounding (with more mids, as Gus said). I'm a P-bass guy at heart and just couldn't bond with traditional J pickups (I previously had a Skyline DJ with Aeros, too.)

Maybe what you really need is a good P bass! And if you really want low end, see if you can track down a Glaub with a Dark Star.

Try soldering them up in series or install a series/parallel switch. In series, you're bass should sound fat as H3LL! :-)

I rock Circle K's on my 44-02 (Bart's). LOVE THEM. They're pretty bright strings, but when they break in they warm up very nicely. Best feeling strings I've ever used hands down.

I had Circle K's on my DJ-Sonic and loved them. Only changed them out because I wanted to try TI Jazz Flats after the Circle K's had been on my bass for nearly a year. By far the best round wound strings one can buy IMO. I like the .112 balanced set.
