IIRC Skylines aren't equipped with straplock buttons; US Lakies are, they are exactly like Dunlops, so you don't have to change anything in the bass
Trust me, my friend, mine was a good Carvin strap... as a matter of fact, I'm still using it, only it has a lock on each end.
What hapenned didn't have to do with playing style at all. I was at home practicing. It was like falling amid a wide and even road.

Hey Lakland brethren. I have a set of 4-string Lakland Custom Wound stainless steel strings in a medium gauge that I'm wanting to pass on to another Laklander who digs SS strings. I used them last night on my gig and they just don't jive with the feel and sound I want on my 44-02 Deluxe. I've always used Custom Wound Nickels on that bass, but went with SS for a change of pace... didn't jive!

They are pre-cut for through-body stringing and have less than 2 hours gig play on them. Still zingy! PM me your address if you want them.

The trans brown over mahogany looked good when I had it, but sparkle will look better IMO.

It's cool to see a Skyline so early in the product lifecycle, that's for sure. I like the trans charcoal, but not so much the dark cherry. Might look better in 'person,' though...

After selling off all my Sadowskys and enjoying playing paassive basses again, I found another Lakie today: a LPB JO5 w. Fralins and a RW board.

So that makes 2 LPB Skyline 5 strings in a single day!!!!

I ordered my first 2 Lakies about a week apart...but they came about a month apart...so you are in much better shape!

I've tried to love active basses, but passives just work better for me.

Just got my 3 tone sunburst JO5 skyline with maple neck from Saluki! A GAS killer for sure! The J Retro in it is ridiculous! Pics sure to come!

wow! glad you like it! the J-retro is a cool addition...I had a (well 2 actually) DJs with the J-retro and loved the sound!

I've got a Skyline DJSonic but am beginning to think (maybe it's just me) that the ChiSonic single coils are a bit thin sounding. I'm contemplating swapping in some Fralins but not sure if this will work as it appears the route for the Chi covers is larger than a standard J p'up route. Will new pickups work under the covers or are the Chi's attached to the chrome covers? Basically can I swap pickups and if so how easy or difficult will it be?

mine have a GREAT mid range and low register.....snappier though as is stated in Gus' gre's quotes.....

That's what I suspected. But let me ask this because it could be other parts of my signal chain; those who have compared Chi Singles in similar J style basses to more traditional pickups, would you say the Chi's sounded "thinner" or more "brittle" with less low end going on and more up top? This is something that's been bugging me for a while and i've gone through several amps and cabs over the last few years and the one constant has been my bass...

Very interesting. I recently sold my USJO with Fralins and kept my USJO with single-coil Chi-sonics--primarily because I find the Chis fatter-sounding (with more mids, as Gus said). I'm a P-bass guy at heart and just couldn't bond with traditional J pickups (I previously had a Skyline DJ with Aeros, too.)

Maybe what you really need is a good P bass! And if you really want low end, see if you can track down a Glaub with a Dark Star.

maybe you are correct! I am finding I am "more" of a P bass guy (and active 55-94, 55-07 etc BUT LOVE the CHi single coils myself....

Went down to NOLA for the first 3 days of Jazz Fest and OF COURSE caught Mr. George Porter Jr.

I was pleasantly surprised to see him playing his Laklands. Typically if he's in NOLA or within driving distance, he'll rock his old '70 P-bass. He must've officially retired it at this point.

I quite agree. It's a tragedy, considering how many truly stunning Laklands they have. They also have some of the last new Darryl Jones skline basses out there, I think. 1300 euros, if my memory serves me correctly. And they also have a 3-tone burst US DJ as well. And a burgundy mist US JO. And (important one, this) a SHORELINE GOLD SKYLINE Jerry Scheff!

By the way, about the whole 'ding' thing? You should see the whopper I put in mine. While practicing, I turned around too quickly and smacked the bass REALLY hard right into the corner of a table. I don't have any photos of it, but essentially there's something akin to a meteor crater in the finish about an inch above the bridge.

Returning to the subject of expensive music shops...I got my Lakie from Bruce Millers in Aberdeen, Scotland. Shout out and karma bump for them - they were listing the LPB DJ at £1250. They gave it to me for £950, and even threw in a Lakland soft case!
WOW! Deal of the century, I think.

Same system I use! Grolsch isn't my fave, but I'll make sacrifices in order to protect my basses

Can someone explain please ... those Chi-sonics, the wide ones, are they humbuckers or single coils ? And what does that switch do (whether they're splittable pickups or not) ? Surprised I can't find more about the Chi-sonics on the lakland website.

I'm also confused by this from the Lakland website:

Chi-Sonics are designed for high output with a wide frequency response. Chi-Sonics give you warm, rounded bottom, detailed mids, and a smooth, natural
high end.

Recent discussions here suggests Chi's are all about a vintage tone ... not sure how that fits with the description "wide frequency response" ... vintage to me suggests a relative lack of highs.

That bass has switchable humbuckers, the switch will allow user to select single coil operation where half of each 'bucker is used.

There are 3 different versions of the chrome-encased Chisonics: 1) long, slim single coils. 2) humbuckers in the wide housing. 3) singles in the wide housing.

The wide singles are typically seen in Decades.

I sold my Chi singles because they were too fat and lacked highs. I consulted with Hanson iand JP wrote to me that was in the concept itself of a 60-ies kind of sound, like Hagstroem etc.

I am now getting very confused ... is "60's" the same as "vintage" ? Is "vintage sound" the same as "less highs" or is "vintage sound" more like "more mids" ?

I guess I need to listen for myself ... not that easy here in the UK ... I've never seen a chi-sonic in the flesh, so lacking 1st-hand experience I'm reliant eithet on MP3's or discussions here ...

I have a Chi equipped DJ and a JO with Fralins. IMO, Chi's are not vintage voiced. They have a more modern, bright sound. Will try and get some clips up tonight.
