I agree with JJ - the added chrome looks is sweet on many color schemes!

IF you decide to leave it, I'd recommend continuing to use double faced tape. If it bothers you, go to a home center or hardware store and find some in grey not white. Or, if you are handy, get two new screws similar tot he ones holding the PG on and use a dremmel/rotary tool to remove all but a 1/16" of the screw's shafts. Then press that into the foam tape. At that point, the final result will look as if you installed it permanently.

I tend to not wan more screw holes added than what is required.

Thát is a very good idea. Thanks :)

I go back and forth all the time on this issue - how does it feel for you?

My Lakland 55-60 now looks like this:

But I'm doubting about this:

Would match my vintage Fender, more or less:

Do that, yes or no?

I like it now, but I don't know how I'll feel in 2 months or so. I guess I'll be going with RumbleBeeAL's tip.

I put some new strings on my bass today btw. Mán that bass is great.

when i put my bass in the case, i grabbed it by the top half of the neck, closer to the headstock side than body.
i heard a small cracking sound.
i guess this is because by grabbing it like this, the weight of the body is bending the neck wood?
i've never had this issue with other basses but my US lakland is doing it.
i didn't think the neck wood would be that weak but maybe my theory about why i heard a small cracking sound is wrong too.
hmm hope its nothing serious, had a minor panic attack!
any ideas?

Anyone know what barts were used for 55-94s ... specifically I have a 2005 55-94D that I really like .... would that be a
Bartolini MM5CBC in there ?

That is way beyond my expertise. The guys at Lakland might know, although it's been 4 years since they used Barts. Bartolini should be the best source.

OK I'll see if I can make it easier.

Bartolini offer two kinds if MM pickup. The older one is dubbed 'original' while the later one is called 'classic bass' and they have "far more "air" and definition at the top" according to the bartolini site. Don't know when they were introduced but they were around in late 2004 at least.

So my 2005 55-94 might have had either ... anyone know which it would have been ?

Do I need to take apart the bass to find out ?

Is this the difference between 'old barts' and 'new barts' that people talk about with respect to Lakies ? And if so, when did that change happen ?

Andy

P.S. the reason for all this pickup geekiness is that I'm still not satisfied with the sound of my 2008 55-02 with lakie pickups ... I'm considering a swap.

If you mean that you had the bass in the air, parallel to the floor and you were only holding it near the headstock, then that would put a lot of stress on the neck. I'd check the neck bolts and make sure they're all tight (maybe you heard a wiggle in the pocket??).

I believe the switch from 'old' to 'new' Barts happened around 2000. A quick way to tell is to look at the MM pickup. On the Old Barts, the word 'Bartolini' is stamped so that is is recessed into the plastic of the pickup. On the 'New Barts', the word is extruded so that it is above the surface. To use belly-button terminology, old one are 'innies', new ones are 'outties'. You probably have 'new' ones if it's a 2005.
