here's me with my 55-69. the lower horn makes it look more balanced. i always felt that it looked too short on 55-94's.

Yeah, I felt the same way as well when I was looking to buy my original 55-02. the looks of the thing weren't what sold me on it, though I've come to like the 55-02/55-94's unique shape and fabulous feel since.

But I also agree that the lower horn on your bass gives the body shape a radically different character, and one that really works.

Never had that problem with any of my Laklands. In fact, the body shape of the Lakland 55/44-94 flagship bass was what drew me in initially... Fenders and most Fender-like basses are so big they make me look tiny with the bass on. The Lakland body shape and the lower horn reduce the overall mass and 'footprint' of the bass to where it looks and feels 'at home.' That small lower horn is a calling card of Lakland in many ways, and it of course yields pretty much unimpeded access to all the upper frets. Very comfy! As always, YMMV.

After finally sitting down with a 54-94 I wish that they'd make the longer lower horn an option. I can speak for others but the thing constantly felt like it was about to slide off of my leg. Sounds great though.

BOTH the oval bridge and short lower horn had to grow on me. Now I love everything about the xx-94 or 02 looks and feel.

Glad you're loving your bass.

Same here...

Wow! Maybe I need to switch to a "Fender-like" type bass to make things appear more proportionate... j/k

A question for owners of both 55-02 standard and deluxe basses. My 2004 55-02 standard has perfect balance on a strap. No neck dive what so ever. Been thinking about getting a cherryburst deluxe version. I've read two reviews of the deluxe model on the Lakland site, including Ed Friedland's, and both mention sleight neck dive. Is there a difference in weight between the two models that would cause this? Also the fret work on mine came with some fairly pronounced fret sprout and not the most careful cutting of the nut slots. Has the pleking process improved this? Thanks,Jim

most likely - not.

both are swamp ash from the same source, and Skylines are only topped with a rather thin maple veneer that only adds a visual luxury effect

Carl's going to install a bridge pickup in my new [to me - thanks John! and Doude!] LOG bass. Don't know the exact model yet, I told Carl what of sound I am after. He's da man.
VT-VT layout, US-like neck treatment, and bone nut. Additional stompbox pre is being discussed, bet there's an issue...

I knew it would be mine! only didn't know it would take a year...

Great Color choice - I've yet to see any photos of this color that do it justice. In person, the CherryBurst color is very rich and appealing! I owned a 55-02D Cherry Burst with Maple board and regret selling it looking back of course... You know what they say about hind sight being 20/20?

Of course the top layer is different wood material - however, I would doubt that has much bearing on any additional weight being added. As with anything crafted of wood, I'd imagine typical variances in weight from unit to unit are to be expected.

I didn't notice any significant fret sprout on mine. However, I've read many posts regarding this on the maple boards. You may simply try using EXTRA FINE sand paper wrapped on a block and slowly work the sprouts down to a comfortable level - do not go too deep, get too excessive, or else you take a chance and end up scuffing up the side of the neck.

Hi Gang,

I mentioned a few pages back that I've ordered a trans white 55-60 from Bass Central. :)
Amy thoughts on the recent run of Skylines? Just curious if the build quality has changed at all. I have to wait another few weeks and am getting itchy.....

Thoughts?

I bought one of the Skyline LE 44-01's (trans blue/maple) recently, and had no issues, great bass, just decided to upgrade the electronics (pickups and preamp), not really feelin the Barts.

My 55-60 is darn near perfect . . . I say "near," as I still have an issue with some notes along the neck that when played, sound like a warble - or out-of-tune! The setup and intonation is perfect. I had this from the first day . . . mentioned it on the Lakland Website . . . it was suggested to me to change strings. I am now on my third set of strings in the two months of owning the bass. Still an issue. That said . . . details and playability is unsurpassed. I actually had to raise the action a hair . . . was just a tad too low for my liking. I will be adding an Audere JZ3 preamp to the bass and going to Chromes flats eventually!

Did you try adjusting the pickup height?

I am working on a FrankenSquier and I noticed a warbling/chorusing effect on the high notes of the G string. The pickup height was high on the treble side for both the bridge and neck pickups and after I lowered them a smidge the problem went away. Hope this helps!

I just measured the pickups . . . they are set to suggested specs. I'm getting most of that warble on the E and A strings, and a resonating sustain on the B string - way up high though, like beyond the 12th fret . . . I know, what am I doing up there on the B string?

Anyways, the neck pickup is very low, and I just lowered the bridge pup a tiny bit on the B and the G side. I have to play tonight . . . I'll see how it goes then . . .

Just wanted to post a sexy bass pic from a recent gig - the lighting and whatever Greg the photographer did really makes the quilt top just pop! :D

edit: btdubbs... The band I played with is called 'Love Panther and the Sexual Prowess, Formerly Known as Man Whore' (or LPATSPFKAMW for short, to make it easier). It's a joke band, with songs that toe the line between scandalous and outright wrong. If any of you guys are in the S Jersey/Philly area, it's a fun time. This gig was at the Grape Room in Manayunk last Sat. night.
