LAKLAND OWNERS GROUP #50!!!

i have a few questions for my fellow Lakland owners. as some of you just know i recently joined this illustrious group so i am new to Lakland Basses. on my 55-02 volume knob seems to turn very loosely with not much resistance at all, much different tension from the other knobs. second when i open the control cavity to try different mid EQ settings the circuit board isnt secured to anything it has some neoprene on the back and turned face in. and third i have been using DR strings since the 90's so i changed out the strings to DR black beauties, they dont really fit with stringing through body, has any one else used BB's own their 55-02/94? the bass sounds amazing and feels great just wanted to make sure i wasnt going to start having problems down the road.

Since the volume knob also includes a push/pull element/feature for active and passive modes, it is a different component and may seem to feel different when turning. I doubt it will self adjust on you. If so, maybe contact Lakland and see if they can provide assistance with replacing the pot all together.

Once you find your desired setting, try some double faced tape on the side of the unit to temporarily attach it and keep it from bouncing around.

I'll let someone else chime in o this one. However, in my opinion, there's little to know difference between the two methods of stringing these instruments - more of a personal preference thing. :hiding:

Regarding the string issue...I've had a Lakland 55-94 for most of the past 10 years and find that the string through body option NEGLIGIBLE at best...as far as any difference in sound/feel/playability

For me, stringing at the bridge gives me a larger variety of string manufacturers which is far more of an advantage...

hmmm....I had a 55-02 deluxe (ORIGINAL Amber) with no neck dive issues....I also have a 55-07 with deluxe top, a 55-94 fretless (no top) and a JJ...no neck dive on ANY of them!

Yes....veneer on Skyines..actual "top" on US models (According to Carl)....I thought BOTH were veneers.....I guess this is ANOTHER Skyline/US difference....

on several 94s I gave played the effect is like this. +1 to the push-pull element, that must be the cause

alas, not all string sets allow for stringing them through a 35-inch scale bass... Then I string them using the top-load! Many -a-time it has been discussed if the difference is notable at all, and there was no ultimate answer.
BTW, some major stringmaker, I forgot who though, gave the following advice. You may want to try stringing the lower strings top-load to improve clarity and percision, and the higher strings through the body to uphold the string's own sustain.
I do this sometimes. It depends on the set actually.




But, seriously, if you notice much difference that you can tell with your eyes shut, let me know
As a matter of fact, what does bug me a lot more is coil boring at the first fret. To avoid that I will top-load a low string anyway, even if the bridge-side coil bore is all the way over the bridge pickup.

I think a Skyline P will fill the void for you quite nicely. As you may know, Lakland has a fair number of choices in this arena these days. There's the 44-64 (formerly the Bob Glaub), which comes with a 1.75" neck. There's also the 44-64 Custom (formerly the Duck Dunn), which has a 1.5" neck and always comes with blocks, binding and a matching headstock. The stock finishes for the former are 3-tone sunburst and black, and for the latter it's candy apple red. However, Lakland made special runs of both starting in mid-2010 in both teal green metallic and inca silver (the 44-64/Glaubs in these runs come with matching headstocks). These runs will continue for the rest of 2011, according to Lakland.

Sound: Since roughly late 2007/early 2008, Lakland's P basses have come with an in-house pickup. It's definitely more aggressive and modern-sounding rather than vintage with the tone wide open, especially with rounds on. But I think it's pretty responsive to the tone knob, so you can dial in more of an old-school sound, especially with flats. Alternatively, you could find a used pre-2007 Skyline with the Fralin pickup, which cops much more of a '60s Fender P tone.

Just to further muddy the waters, Lakland is coming out with a Skyline version of this (only with the split-coil pickup, at least for now):[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] But that won't be out till the end of 2011 or so.

This is a good week for me! I have brand new 55-60 Custom set for delivery tomorrow! I can't wait. Also sent in a DJ4 to Leo a few weeks back that I bought new from Bass Central that had some pretty flawed fret leveling issues. It was a 2008 model, and it buzzed pretty badily. Leo took good care of me and it should be back in my hands later this week. Talked to Leo today and he said it plays amazingly well now, so I can't wait. I feel much better already just knowing he and Carl had their hands all over it getting it right!

Lakland is great!
