Okay I've got 'new barts', I was already fairly sure of that. What I'm NOT really sure about (though it seems fairly likely) is: Does 'old barts' mean 'original' and 'new barts' mean 'classic bass' ? Looks like 'classic bass' was considered a new thing in 2004 so I'm not sure they would have appeared in a 2000 lakie ... if 2000 was the switchover year.

Thoughts ?

Regular 55-94=Swamp Ash body
Classic 55-94=Alder body +pickguard

Pickups wold be consistent across styles.

If you mean that you had the bass in the air, parallel to the floor and you were only holding it near the headstock, then that would put a lot of stress on the neck. I'd check the neck bolts and make sure they're all tight (maybe you heard a wiggle in the pocket??).

Yeah I hope it was simply a little wiggle!
The idea that the wood inside the neck is cracking really freaks me out :S

i've never had this issue with other basses but my US lakland is doing it.
i didn't think the neck wood would be that weak but maybe my theory about why i heard a small cracking sound is wrong too.
hmm hope its nothing serious, had a minor panic attack!
any ideas?

I'm thinking you just heard something in the neck pocket. Not that anything is loose necessarily, but it is a new bass and as tight as it is likely to get before you "break it in". Unless you actually see something move I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah! Check those neck bolts and see if the A lines up w/ the fretboard face-dots (in other words---see if the neck is shifted north or south in the pocket). Also, your intonation would have slightly altered if the neck shifted.

Sorry, misunderstanding again. What I meant was, in a Lakland context, when we say 'old barts' does that refer to the pickups that bartolini now call 'original' and when we say 'new barts' does that refer to the pickups that bartolini call 'classic bass' ?

Seems plausible, but I have my doubts since it looks like bartolini's 'classic bass' pickups were introduced in mid-2002 which is much later than the date of switchover from 'old barts' to 'new barts' in lakland 55-94s ... so 'classic bass' pickups wouldn't have been around at the 2000 switchover point.

Ahh ... becoming clearer now, thanks. So there were two changes.

1) In approx 1998/99 'new barts' were substituted for 'old barts'.

2) In approx 2002 bartolini made another change to the pickups supplied to Lakland.

Since in 2002 (at some point) Bartolini started producing what they call 'classic bass' pickups, and apparently stopped producing 'original' pickups, that must correspond to the changed pickups in Lakies at that point.

So it's pretty clear my 2005 55-94D has what bartolini call 'classic bass' pickups. Which is what I really wanted to know.

I had that happen ONCE (with Blue Velvet - my 55-07).....no issues since....I think it was just somehting in the neck pocket (?)

careful where you grab it.....the bodies are kinda heavy on SOME....

MAN! we REALLY do need a Lakland FAQ section there so we do not ahve to go searching for advice/old posts.....

will start a thread of "need to know" quesirons and will start compiling data...will need all of YOUR help!!!

Sounds like that's a subforum in it's own right within the LOG site. Was that what you intended ?

Either that or a sticky thread .... but a sub-forum sounds better. Every time the moderator sees a question that's been asked half-a-dozen times ... move it to the FAQ forum. It'll just build up naturally that way.

Suggested topics:

New vs old barts (of course)
factory supplied strings
dip switch settings
what year is my lakie

I'm sure you can think of a few more ...

check out tetsuya's new lakland.
its a 55-69 but with an ebony fingerboard, looks like white pearl inlays.
pickguard and pickup covers are matching quilted maple top.
some sort of graphics on the body too.
