I stripped the finish off of the back of the neck on my Skyline and am in the process of applying a tung oil finish. It is turning out great and is not at all visually different from the satin finish that is already on (I left it on the front and back of the headstock). Next up I am going to start the long journey of adding the Hipshot HB1 tuners.

If you don't mind my asking - what kind of seminars do you teach? I sometimes teach for a professional organization when my work schedule permits, too.

I appraise business assets for a living and was teaching a class to new appraisers...I actually teach about 4 different courses for the society as well as speak at their conferences every so often...what do you speak on???

Back on track....see below:

I'm going to give the cliche response: "Oh...if it was only a 5 string!" (and, for affordability, a Skyline!). This it EXACTLY the Glaub/P-bass variant I want - Black, Rosewood, Tort...and the kicker P/J mod. That is a fantastic bass.

Matt, it was a pleasure meeting you at the Crossroads Saturday night! I know you were struggling with the house sound for the 1st song or 2, but once sorted out, your rig sounded great! (I have a Berg HD112 myself, and love it!) And your wife on the cello really added a cool dimension to the band.

BTW, since this is the LOG thread, here's an obligatory pic of my 44-02, which was traded in & then purchased back by me.

It's not jazz-style, but a Bob Glaub.

Anyway, I found a "smart" way to do it. The smallest allen key I had with some ordinary household tape on the tip made the allen key just the right size.

What are the big differences between the GK and the Mesa? I'm an Ashdown guy, but I'll admit that, since money's always an issue ( example: Sadowsky = 6 years of serious saving ), I haven't had the chance to experiment all that much.

Do you find that certain rigs sound better with specific basses, or is it a more general taste thing?

J, I haven't tried the Carbine series, but I've read a lot about them. If you're into, say the warm roundness of the Ashdown ABM500, the M6/9 may not be your thing. OTOH, the Mesa Walkabout (which I've owned and loved for 5 years) does the ABM500-type sound in spades, and it has a wonderfully flexible EQ section. I haven't cared much for the tone of most GK amps myself.

Hey, congrats on the new Sadowsky on the way! SWEET!

I put my Lakland G.A.S. on a back burner.
Thinking if I want to sell my entire GK rig and one bass and ten invest that $$ into a brand new Mesa rig?
Maybe a Mesa M9 Carbine head and a Mesa PH610 cab?
So one of my recently acquired US Laklands might be hitting the block up for grabs shortly?
Wonder which one?

If it helps, I run my 55-02 through a Mesa M6 (powering a pair of Berg AE210s) and I love it, the voicing control is actually usable, though I generally run it all pretty flat.
I can only imagine the M9 would be more impressive, do to the Graphic EQ amongst other things.

Yeah, I'm definitely into a little tube warmth, hence my 500. I tried a GK rig in a music store once and found it a little too zingy for me, but I was wondering if that's just because I didn't know the head well enough to warm things up.

I've always liked the way hybrid heads like mine get the warmth due to the tube pre, but get the SS quick response due to the rest of the amp being SS.

One day, I'll actually sit down in a shop with a whole afternoon to spare and work my way through a tonne of amps and cabs.

Yea I was considering the M-Pulse 600 which is more or less a big brother to the Walkabout.
Similar control layout, Just more watts and more knobs to fiddle with.
I am trying to find out the main differences between the M-Pulse 600 and the Carbine 6/9 heads.
And then hope to decide which to pull the trigger on?

Never heard the Bergs in person.
But many many guys here love them.
I have NO need at all for the extra watts the M9 adds.
Just for the $200 upgrade in price guessed the EQ might be worth the price jump?
No idea where this will end up? hahaha

yep yep, if we do not blow it on gear, we always end up blowing on something or another anyway.
At this point, having blown enough over time, now I am just letting go of stuff to get different stuff.

I just picked up a Mesa M Pulse 600 and am very impressed so far. Ive used the Walkabout for a good while, also. But the 600 really has a super solid punch to it.

The guys at Sadowsky sent me the pics of my finished bass body and told me the whole bass would likely be done ahead of schedule, so rather than keeping up on my TB threads I've been sitting in a dark corner and vibrating in anticipation.

I'm afraid this is going to make me not kidding about someday trading up my 5502 for a 5594...

congrats J!!!! glad to see "ahead of shedule"....I keep telling you my norther buddy....go US and NEVER go back....well.....maybe....

for an elk steak and the "right" scotch....I may even be able to assit in the journey....

I have used a bunch of various heads and cabs over time.
Just on the eternal search for a tone they blows me away.
I like the idea of Mesa.
Just always respected that brand.
So thought maybe roll the dice and give it a rip.

Problem with rigs, ya cannot easily flip them if ya do not like them.
With basses ya can sell them to buyers all around the country and world. Normally can get your investment back quickly on mint basses if ya do not decide to keep it.
With heavy amps and cabs you are more or less restricted to local buyers. Makes it much harder and slower to flip things that do not float yer boat.
