OK, stop me if this has been covered but I am just curious. When you have the option for stringing through the body or just through the bridge alone which do you and is there any noticeable, audible difference either way?

Cool ... but one with an obvious Lakland headstock would be even cooler (and probably not hard to knock up as a design and then put onto cafe press).

That's subjective, but okay. Try it and see if you feel/hear a difference. Can't hurt! There's a story out there that MusicMan lost Pino as a full-on endorser a long time ago because they wouldn't make him a new StingRay with thru-body stringing like his old classic one. Thru-body made a difference to him, obviously! Personally, I string thru-body all the time except for when I use flats. I'd love to find a flat that could go thru-body but I don't think those exist.

Hey - stupid Lakland question. Adjusting the truss rod. The darn allen wrench tool provided doesn't really fit into the slot on the pick guard. User error?

I have a a 55-01 with a couple of strings through the bridge (they were too short)... no difference between the strings at all.

Love the Stingray style guard! Nice pair of basses!

That is the first time I've seen a pickguard on a 55-02 that I liked. Nice bass.

Yeah, the pickguard adds a little reminiscence to me as well. This baby sang to me last night. The neck was sanded, refinned with gun oil a la Stingray - it is amazingly smooth! I will say the 55-01 has a different bridge tone (obviously), but the low B on the 55-02 absolutely gets 'em in the gut.

Yum.

I go thru body if the strings allow---- I don't like the full diameter part of a string wrapping around my tuner posts. And you also wanna make sure that taper strings go to full diameter shortly past the saddle or your intonation will never be right. So, it depends on the strings.... and I can't feel or hear a difference, but opinions vary.

I've been remiss in not keeping caught up with my Lakland comings and goings. This is the keeper. Its a 2011 USA Glaub custom ordered P/J with the in-between neck width -- in-between the J and P width. This guy was custom ordered for a country artist to use on the 2011 CMA awards show, didn't arrive in time, and was sold by the dealer. I am the second owner. I'm not a huge black bass fan and did have to change out the original black pick guard for this red tort. She looks classy, now.

That's awesome! And the 1.65" nut width is my favorite. Congrats on nabbing such a beautiful bass!

No, Carl told me that he cuts a little off the end of the allen wrench so it slips in easier. I've been using the ones I got from him. Take a dremel and cut off a little, but don't cut too much and make a clean cut.

I love Lakland but why would they provide a tool that doesn't fit the bass? I assume the tool came from Lakland.

For some reason, that immediately brought to mind the scene in Small Time Crooks, where Michael Rapaport says that he doesn't care if the light is supposed to go on the front of the mining helmet because it "looks cooler" backwards.

teaching a seminar at a hotel near Dulles.....I teach several semminars a year for a professional organization I belong too....I DO have a full time jobe believe it or not....he he...

Hey drpepper - and anyone else with an 01 and an 02... I'm about to join the exclusive organization as my new (to me) 55-02 is coming tomorrow to join the 55-01 in tandem magnificentness.

My question: what circumstances do you prefer to use one bass over the other, or is it just a coin flip when you head off to your gig?

well...GREAT question...in some cases it has to do with the mix of songs...sometimes it is the sound I am after that day...other times??? Just the "mood"....I will say that I typically practice with the same bass I will use on Sunday so I know what to expect.....coin flips work as well!

For some reason, my -01 basses are typically my 'go-to' axes when I grab one of my Laklands. I love my 44-02 for its versatility, but the overall tonal profile of the -01 basses really appeals to me for 'everyday' use. That said, nothing beats the 44-02 in the studio. Occasionally I'll get a wild hair and the 44-02 goes out for a string of regular gigs with me. <shrug> It's an imperfect science.
