So I took a look and it appears that from the outer edge of the string to the edge of the FB is only 1/8".

Is this within normal spec?

That used to happen to me sometimes with my 4-94 if I was being careless or moving around too much. Hasn't happened although I still move around plenty.

It might have been a string change that did it - I used to use DRs (usually Lo Riders), and am now using Ken Smith Compressors. I really have no recollection if there was tension differences, but I'd imagine a higher tension string would be harder to pull off of the fb.

Very interesting, I did just start to happen within the last month or so. And wouldn't you know it, I changed strings within that time as well. I went from 45-105 DR Sunbeams to 45-105 EB's - basically because I didn't have any DR's around. I'm planning on trying out some of the new Cobalts, which are supposed to be a bit tighter than HiBeams, when they get here this week, so will report back if it continues after the next string change. Thanks Nat!

I wonder if somehow the nut is not quite cut right, or the bridge position of the string is off somewhat. Have you done any measurements vs. other basses? And it appears this is a Skyline, right? Tolerances have been known to wander on some of those. just my random thoughts.

No prob Black Bart! :D

And please post some insights on how the Cobalts sound... a fellow over on the Lakland Basses group on facebook just tried them out and was very pleased with the sound. I dig the strings I have on now, but it's always fun to try out a relatively cheap way to change up tones.

And Holdsg might be onto something with the nut - if the string isn't sitting properly, that could definitely be a contributing factor.

Got to jam with two of my favorite people at their wedding day this past winter. I was sick as a dog, but managed to have a great time. And my girlfriend said I looked sexy on stage all dressed up :smug:

Well, looks like my flame 4-07 has made room for a sweet tobacco 4-94 deluxe coming soon from overseas.. totally worth it.. thanks gordon :D

now I just have to wait.. again :bawl:

Oh, btw I watched that lakland '3 basses in one' LH3 vid, and well, the thing is.. it's all well and good proving you can make it sound like the old stallwarts, but how do you achieve the J, P and MM tones they show? I assume I could find them by experimenting, but I figured one of you guys might know what settings to use for each

Yep it's a Skyline and the nut seems to be fine in terms of the depth and position of the cut - about the same distance from the side as the E string.

I did however notice at one point when I put a replacement Hipshot black bridge on it that the screw hole alignment for mounting it to the body was a little wonky. The bridge I received direct from Hipshot had equidistant holes from center, whereas the original bridge that is on there now has a discrepancy of nearly 1/4" towards the center on the E side of the bridge.

Like I said above, didn't happen until recently, so perhaps Nat is on to something with the string tension.

Will do, I've been waiting for these to come out since I heard about them, but only bought one set to test drive. Wasn't sure what bass to test them out on first, but given the G string issue I'm having, looks like the 44-02 will be the testing ground.

Here we go again--wow, 6 weeks or so! The leaders are the same, although the distribution is a bit wider. I didn't cut off the count at 10 posts this time; using Chrome instead of Explorer this time allowed me to be more "inclusive." Sorry if that offends any conservatives.:p:hiding:

I have put a set of cobalts on my US Duck, just to test them out. First prax was last night, and I liked the tone all night, still not sure I want rounds on a p- type bass, but I liked the amplified tone for sure. I always like trying new strings.

And #6 huh, I am quite the work-a-slacker.

My surf green Glaub still gets the most playing time by far, I friggin' love that bass!:hyper: I did bring it in to the shop last Friiday so I could get the "vintage" Hanson P pickup installed, I want to give it a whirl and see if I like it more than the neopunch. I'm going to pick up the bass in a couple days, I'll report back.:)

My DS'd Glaub subbed in beautifully at practice last weekend, of course. I'm spoiled!:bassist:

Loosen the strings, loosen the neck bolts, hold the bass in playing position, grab the headstock and lift up toward the ceiling (or E string side). If you're lucky, you'll have enough room in the neck pocket that the neck will shift. You can usually see the strings migrate north across the fretboard. This can be done on a tabletop also, btw. You may need someone to tighten the neck bolts while you hold pressure on the neck.

This is what Sheldon Dingwall had me do to one of his basses that I used to own and I've used it on many since then w/ great results.

Worst case scenario: no neck pocket room = no change which means repositioning the bridge = headache!
