I would put a Joe Osborn against a MIA Fender Jazz anyday of the week! I have one (Skyline) that will never go anywhere! It was purchased as a "temporary" bass until my US JO5 was done and it is still here (along with the US JO5er!).

I have played many Fenders and Many Skylines and love the Skylines so much more...for these reasons:

1) more consistent quality
2) GREAT neck profile
3) Lakland has GREAT customer service (if ever it is needed)
4) You can talk right to the owner of Lakland and get things handled (don't get me started on the time I owned a Fender special edition bass and sent them a question on it!)

...in short...buy it....I am sure you will love it!

The American Fenders are fantastic instruments. I would never blankly tell someone to choose a Skyline over a US Fender as they are different enough that one might appeal to you a bit more than the other. The quality is comparable but I would give a slight nod to the US Fender. Plus the fender has an alder body which i prefer.

HOWEVER

The American Deluxe Jazz is active and I prefer a passive instrument. Plus the JO5 has vintage wound pickups and is $400 or more cheaper. Because of this the JO5 would won out in my book.

Doug, I apreciate a lot your post, you think that i should change the pickups? or they are good enough to put some J-retro Preamp and that's it?

Yeah the thing is that i'm willing to pay 1800$ so i have an american deluxe 2011 in 1 hand and a JO in the other! i'm a active guy, so, with the price of a JO plus a j-retro, it would be almost the same as the MIA

The pickups are the SAME as in US Laklands....I had a DJ with a J-retro and loved it!

There should be no reason to change the pickups...do you really need it to be active? if so, and you like the J-retro, go for it....others swear by other pre-amps (sadowsky, etc)....

I prefer the vintage style pickups with a J-Retro more than the electronics in the Fender. If I had $1800 and could upgrade the JO5 in any way (past the J-retro) then I would throw Fralins into it. The Fralins with J-Retro really are the classic active JO sound to me.

I have a US Deluxe Jazz and I ripped everything out and replaced them with a J-Retro Deluxe and Delano big pole pickups. Just glorious. Because the Delanos are quite transparent the J-Retro can then take over and color my tone any way I want without properties creeping in from the pickups.
