Just thought I'd share this with my Lakland brethren... this was from a show on Halloween and we played one of my original compositions we hadn't hit in over 2 years. Anyway, this was the first recording with my new setup using, as the title indicates, my Tone Hammer, ValveDrive, and Compressore... all summed up into a Radial J48 before it hit the board/front of house. The 44-01 continues to be a powerhouse of a bass... very underrated in its 'non-modded' form.

I gotta say... this recorded tone is thick, punchy, and about as 'perfect' as I could ask to have with no extra work. Definitely the best recorded tone I've gotten in a long time... very happy with the combination of all the above units.

The music is sort of a Flecktones-vibe with some other inflections. Hope you dig it. There are some other recordings on the band's SoundCloud account too... check them out if you'd like.

I felt the Lak HB was "at it's most acoustic" with LaBella black tapes on it.

I didn't say 'upright,' I said it had an interesting 'acoustic' quality to it...if I wanted an upright sound, I'd play my upright :)

That being said, a very famous bluegrass singer and huge country writer in Nashville named Ronnie Bowman came up to me after soundcheck to tell me how much he hates electric bass in country and how much he loved the tone of the Lakland...he said it had a certain 'something' that reminded him of upright bass. I took his point. When I used the front pickup and played with the side of my thumb it was huge and thumpy, but stayed out of the guitars way. When I switched to a pick (front pickup) it has a real nice old school tone with a little extra definition...switched to the back pickup for more of a modern (ish) rock tone.

I'd like to take a couple more laps around the track with this bass, but so far, so good :)

Not sure if it's a good thing if you can smell it that far off, might want to change the strings when it get's there. :ninja:

I am both happy and sad for you my friend.

Happy that you are getting that sweet little something you've been drooling over for quite some time now and I applaud you're restraint in waiting this long.

But sad for you that once it arrives, the hunt will be over and I know how much you enjoy the hunt.

But I'm sure you will enjoy the new bass more than a bag of chips. Congrats!

oh yes, strings are out the door on arrival.
A new set of DR Nickle lowriders stat.

Yes been eyeballing this one for quite awhile.
Soon will be eyeballing it up close.

Sadly the Hunt is never ever over...not till 6 feet under dirt.
And even then? LOL :)

Yeah I know. Speaking of which...

With all this HB talk of late, I'm beginning to think about adding one to the stable, but have some reservations about the body shape and comfort - one of the reasons I never went for a decade.

I don't sling low and have impingement syndrome in my right shoulder so I'm thinking that the depth of the body may be an issue.

The one thing about lakland HB's is that the body is not deep.
It has a very shallow body profile compared to pretty much most other HB's out there.
I was pleasantly surprised when mine arrived.

I think you will love it.
Wonder if we will be seeing a one off stealth black HB in barts future? hmmmmmmm.....??? :ninja:

Thanks Dan, that's what I thought. And the rounded corners seem like it would make it a little more comfortable than a Gibson or Gretsch.

I don't know yet, just thinking, but I do have one more space on the new wall rack :hiding:

Dan is right on about the shape, the Lakland HB has a relatively slim profile. Oh, and a stealth HB would be insanely hot!
