Very interesting! The 44-60 Chi-Sonic that I just acquired has the bridge saddles set crazy high. She sounds awesome with TI flats but has a little more fight in her than necessary. I was thinking to email Lakland to get advice on proper setup including pickup clearances.

Lower the strings and the pups you say?? Any helpful PDF files?

So, I contacted Brian from Lakland, told me about buying a set of Chi's, and I didn't want to be a drag to him, so I'm asking you guys who have or had Lakland Jazz basses with those Chi's, what is the difference in the sound?
I only heared Ed Friedland playing on some, never talked about them or showing anything about them, and heard Dan Maines from Clutch but he uses a distorted Ampeg, and I play mostly funk and some blues/rock, nothing hard as Clutch, so I'm not fully known with it's sound... Please help

I've had them in 2 jazz-style basses. a 44-01 and a DJ. I really liked the chis in a jazz bass, because the stock passive pickups (bartolinis in 44-01 and LH in DJ) kinda leave me cold. I guess I just like a more aggressive tone. I would characterize it as edgier, more sparkle on the high end, more gnarly on the mid-range, and ok but not hit-you-in-the-gut lows, which I think you only get with a pre-amp boosting the lows. So for passive pickups, they get you closer to a modern tone without a pre. I'll let others describe them for you, all I could say is "I liked them very much, but in the end, I just preferred active jazzes" (such ones I now own by other manufacturers) and they were passed onto other owners.

edit: that's funny, I think they give a little more on the top than the vintage LHs. Maybe my ears are different than Markus'.

The best thing to do is check out Lakland's sound clips--they have a set of clips for a 44-60 equipped with Chis, as well as several sets for 44/55-60s with standard J pickups.:)

I was comparing them to the Lakland pickups I had in my standard JO. Lots of variables though...rig, hands, room, strings...etc.

Received my new Lakland fresh from the factory last week. I wanted to run it through a few rehearsals and a gig and then share some thoughts.

My first thought was, "huh... trans-white is kind of pinkish" :hiding: I thought it would be more "white" but I actually had a few people point out that it looks almost pinkish too (while a few others pointed out how cool and unique the "mary kay" finish is) Here's a pic of it sitting between a "vintage white" and an "olympic white". So many shades of white finishes out there. I've gotten used to it now. It is actually a really nice finish ... I'd just never seen a trans-white finish in person, so I didn't know what to expect.

Overall, it's beautiful and delicious and all sorts of sexy. Fit, fretwork and finish are great. The neck finish, smaller frets, and flatter radius allow for easier playability than I've been used to. I don't have to play this bass as "hard" as my (previously) regular bass. It serves up some great tone quite easily, whereas I used to wrestle a bit more. I'm thinking this will help with arthritis and fatigue during long gigs. I don't have to be as aggressive physically to get more aggressive tone.

I was going to elect for some "70's" style pickups, but I was convinced to give the Hanson's a whirl first. They definitely sound strong. Very hot and thick, while retaining clarity. The lows are accounted for, but I feel like it's mid/low-mid focused. The highs are there, but not as harsh as I personally like. I think that it may just be on account of there being less fret wire than my medium-jumbo fretted fender? But it's a well suited sound for my current gig, so I'm leaving them in for now. And I had the bridge pickup placed 3/8" closer to the bridge.

Everyone at Bass Central and Lakland we're great to deal with.

Enough of me listening to myself talk about a bunch of stuff you already know. On to the pictures, right?! :hyper:

Looks like the standard Trans White ot me - the trans finish pulls alot of its color form the ash.

I love the look of mine!
