How did you get the D tuner to allow the stock ferrule to screw on? I agree with macribas (below), that's an import issue

Great idea except that the ferrule won't screw on to the D tuner post.

For me it did, the screw matches but the diameter of the ferrule itself is a little bit smaller. That's why JJ was saying he just uses the stock ferrule for his D-tuners. I have added Hipshot US ultralites to Skylines a couple of times, including this bass here:

In both cases the ferrule didn't work, and I talked to Hipshot, they have superb support!

Hi all!

I'm considering pulling a trigger on a 5 string Lakland (skyline) J bass .... haven't heard better, really!

Anyways Im a but confused as to the model differences :

What's the main differences, , and which would you recommend, between the AJ series, the DJ or the JOsborn series?? I've tried a DJ only.

Also, should I ever want to get/make a fretless out if one of these, any suggestions as to which might work out best?

DJs are passive, have a smaller body than a JO with slightly different lines (look at the horns, guard and plate). JOs are Laklands version of a vintage jazz with similar tone and feel. AJs are Laklands modern jazz that have a preamp (AJ=active jazz). The DJ I've owned or handled felt like they had a slightly thinner possibly narrower neck when compared to my US JO5 (miss that bass!!). I would NOT convert a fretted to fret less when you could easily obtain a fret less neck from Lakland or swap with someone. Just my opinion.

I haven't reviewed or recorded any sample yet...just so busy right now, but...I can say that this is the nicest Skyline I have played! This being a shortscale hollowbody, you'd think it would be a one trick pony, but is is so far from that! You can play anything on it! Very punchy and articlate, and so fun to play. I really find it hard to find a bass that is built this well, and so fun to play at this price. The neck is amazing, and the pickups are killer, with not a lot of single coil hum. I have tapewounds on it and, and love it. This thing is delicious!

And why are Skyline 55-02 considerably pricier than 55-01 ?? (in Europe, 1300€ vs 899€ )

The pick ups and pre in the 55-01 is a lower end Bartolini set up. I have a 55-01 and to me, the sound is beautiful and very modern with the factory electronics. I see no need to upgrade, though I probably will because I love to tinker with basses in a sub-conscious plot to frustrate myself.

The electronics in the 55-02 are higher end Lakland/Hanson designed models with the added benefit of being able to split the coil on the humbucker and the ability to select your mid frequencies with switched under the control plate. You can get a good modern sound and just about any other sound that you want with the 44/55-02's. They are like the Swiss Army knife of basses.


They are very different, the 55-01 is not a lower end model. I have both and it's almost like comparing a Maserati and an Aston-Martin, both are beautiful, but very different.
