nah...not really a QC issue....it was an issue of the epoxy and the pickup magnet "touching" the surrounding...shorting it out.
Due to the way they were assembled, the epoxy gave the magnet a certain amount of "float" which may cause an issue or may not...unfortunately, there was no way to "test it" prior to when the epoxy dried and it was too late (that is the story I got)....I was told that 1/3 or more of the pickups could not be used...
I was REALLY thinking of getting my HoBo refin'd like that (or similar) "If" I bonded with it BUT the burst is so nice on it...way too nice to do over....

Totally different beasts. With the stock pre and pups the 55-01 is totally modern and HiFi. I got a great deal on US Bart's and the 918NTMB pre and the sound is thicker and has more punch and oomph.
When it comes to the 55-02's, I do not like the LH3 setups. I went through a couple before I found one with the Bart setup. The 55-02 with Bart's is not quite as punchy as the MK5's. Its tamer and more polite.
I can get any sound that I need out of either bass but if I want a more aggressive sound, I go with the 55-01. If I need something not as aggressive, I go with the 55-02. Don't think that I'm saying the 55-02 is tame, its a beast in its own right.
If you are wanting something totally different, I put Chi-Sonics in my passive 44-60 and those are a totally different ballgame. I can't imagine what the Chi's sound like with a pre because they are ball busters passive.
I think this is the basic design concept of the 55-02. To my ears you really can get close to either the 60's or 70's jazz sound. Stingray as well and p bass. Its a swiss army knife of a bass.
Ah gotcha, thanks man! My -02 is Bart loaded, and I'd agree that it's got a fat/smooth punch to it. Not a whole lot of growl/grind but it works for me!
I've been thinking of replacing my Spector with an -01 as my second bass. HiFi isn't my go to sound, and I can get a reasonable facsimile of that flavor from my -02.
Who knows though, maybe the -01 would be different enough that I wouldn't care to change it or maybe I'd drop some Chi singles in it!
That's what I figured. That location makes the most sense for the concept of the bass, rather than placing the coils in a unique location.
to you too, Mr. Doude and Doude family
oh, and Spalty arrived just in time for Christmas, yeah me.
I've had 3 of the original design chibuckers fail after working for a while. These were all in MM casings too. Sexual Chocolate has a dead one in her as we speak. I've just never gotten around to calling for the repair. Honestly, I don't feel like shipping it AGAIN!!! Still don't know if I'll trust chibuckers again. I'd be happier with old Barts if I could get one more.
No way man, cover that burst up!
Ok, so it wasn't the epoxy being uncurred so much as a potential electrical short. I assume a 44-07 is just a chi-buckered 44-94?
Just found an old "action" pic. Pretty sure this is during a sound check, I don't normally look so melancholy! Great shot of my bass though, really brings out how nice the wood is! Still thinking of a trans-purple refinish...
Also yes, that is a pillow case modified into a tank-top...we didn't want to be taken too seriously of course!

Do not refinish that bass!

And, speaking of purple...
