I really like the Duncan SPB-1 in my Duck Dunn. It nails the vintage pbass sound. And at $60 or less, its very cost effective too.

I need some experienced Lakland users advice for a 44-64 . . .

Maybe the neo-punches are not my "thang" . . . I know Fralin pups are held in high regard (and were the standard pup in these models), but I've heard positive remarks on Lollar.

I guess I'm looking for a more vintage sound - any thoughts on the better option? I know it's very subjective, but curious for thoughts . . .

FYI, bass has LaBella flats - band plays mostly old school soul and some funk.

I had Fralin pups in my 44-64 and it was very much a vintage sound. I've heard good things about Aguilar's pups, and I did like the SD Quarter Pounders I had in my jazz

People bust SD too much. They're good pups

From what I recall, when they fill them with epoxy to seal the windings, they tended to leak and ruin the chrome finish. There could be other reasons as well. They do look cooler than the MM/soap bar type of cover, but understand if they were such a pain to get right.

That sounds more like quality control than anything. Epoxy should never leak out onto the housings if it's cured. Glad they got it sorted out.

Fralins and Lollars will give you the vintage sound you are after, as will the Hanson vintage. Of those 3, I prefer the Fralin.

Haha, word traveled fast.
I've lusted for the Sea Monster for awhile, and almost missed seeing it available. Been pretty busy of late and not able to keep up on TB. Thankfully JJ and I worked out a win/win for both of us. It's certainly going to be be a painful wait!

Sadly, my US Duck Dunn will probably be the one that has to go. So if anyone knows of a good home..

I am pretty sure they made maybe a dozen or less??
But they should know more about the limited number that were made and the story about the 44-07.
They should have kept making them IMO...I like it better than the 44-94.

I have only personally seen 2.
Mine and the other one that belonged to 3-4 of the LOG-ers and recently was sold by Gary.

Less than 10 44-07/55-07s were made (IIRC)....there were issues with the chrome surrounds and the humbucker pickups....

if you find one....get it...

I'm sure of the number made, but there's one in the block party as well.
I believe they had problems with the chrome housings on the humbuckers which is why you don't see too many.

They make new ChiSonic Humbuckers so I'm sure 44-07's can be built now. I have them in my HB, and LOVE them!

If you want "vintage"...get the Hanson Vintage pickups...IMHO they sound VERY much like the Fralins....I have them in my LOG bass and White Lightnin (Vintage Hanson PJ set up)....

nah...not really a QC issue....it was an issue of the epoxy and the pickup magnet "touching" the surrounding...shorting it out.

Due to the way they were assembled, the epoxy gave the magnet a certain amount of "float" which may cause an issue or may not...unfortunately, there was no way to "test it" prior to when the epoxy dried and it was too late (that is the story I got)....I was told that 1/3 or more of the pickups could not be used...
