yeah, they just have that low-mids grunt inherent to their tone. It's just what my ear likes hearing.

What you love is the Modulus version of Bartolini electronics. I like the sound of the Roscoe, Pedulla and Zon versions of Bartolini. Lakland version, not so much. For what it's worth, the proprietary Pedulla electronics don't play nice with other pickups. I have Aguilar OBP-3s in my Jerzy Drozd Obsession Excellency 5 and LeCompte VB5, and they sound great. I've installed OBP-3s in several of BSD's customer basses, and the clients and I have been very pleased with the results.

I've never had that issue in the ones I've owned or installed. I'd be suspicious of the pots if the preamp were "touchy."
I consider the OBP-3 as massive, I would not characterize it as touchy.

It definitely needs to be paired with the right pickups. I've owned all three OBP preamps and can tell you that in the 3, a little goes a long way (what I mean by touchy). Personally, I like the Nordy 3 band better, but the OBP-2 with single coil J pickups is hard to beat.
I just swapped my DJ5 for an upgraded 5501 (burst/rw) that has Aggie soap bars and an OBP3 in it. Today will be my first go at it. My original intent was to sell the Aggie pups and pre and do another Lace alumitone transmogrification, but I will sample it as is before doing anything rash.
Spent an hour or so alone with the Aggie electronics and I have to say this is quite a beastly combination-a very wide range of tones and extremely powerful eq....tons of punch available on tap. The one I got has no pull/passive option and no mid shift capability-I don't know whether those features are doable with the OBP 3 or not. I will spend some more time A/B ing it with my Lace equipped 5501. I have also started experimenting with the Joe Meek FloorQ pedal compressor in my chain and am finally learning a lot about how I want to use compression-lots of fun messing around with this......
After a slight debacle with the 55-01, I received the correct bass yesterday. The original 55-01 that I received was damaged by UPS and I just glanced at it, notified Bass Central, sent them pics of the damage and put it back in the case. It wasn't until they wanted a couple of other pics at the request of UPS that I realized that they sent the wrong bass. The had the SN and pics mixed on the website. I called and we swapped basses. They had great service considering the circumstances and did everything they could to make it right. This one has a great feel, sleek neck like we all love and sounds great. The only issue was that the electronics were not functioning properly, so I popped the cover and checked the connections and didn't really see anything. I moved the position of the pre slightly and everything began to work properly. I'm guessing that the pre was grounding somehow or that it's faulty. I haven't been able to reproduce the fault again so it may be stable. I'm going to give Bo a call monday anyway and see if they will send a replacement. I'm going to use it tonight with the 55-02, Genz SM9.2 and Berg AE410. It sounds awesome at home, and can't wait to hear it in the mix at a venue.

Finally got a hollowbody 30 enroute. Looking forward to something really different.
Mid-shift is possible on an OBP-3. The stock switchable mid frequencies are 400 and 800 Hz, but they can be altered by putting caps of different values in the circuit. Somewhere I have wiring diagrams showing the cap configurations.
Speaking of wiring diagrams, looking for the MK-1 pre wiring diagram for the 01 series. Even a photo would do. Thanks in advance.
