Lakland Owners Group #69

That looks great. And as you said, it dresses up the bass a bit. I bought mine through Lakland as well, and prices were fair and quick to get. I like the black a lot on that. Lol, that's what I did, after I got my first pickguard, I started to think what else would work and ordered another. I would also try mint and tort. Here are mine. I kept the tort on for a while but now the mint has been on there for several months and is the winner.

The black really sets it off and really adds to the look! I went with black on my all natural 44-02

The retainer bars don't have spacers that the screw goes through? Its just exposed screws through bar? I am looking at photos and I am a bit shocked. I don't like those bars because they scream "cheap" to me but that is extra bad.

Note: I only play 4 strings but have owned a few with retainer bars.

Nice Classic! I went through a similar process trying to figure out what to do with mine after I picked it up. While it sounds amazing, the look leaves a little bit to be desired. The alder wood doesn't have a very figured grain and looks very plain for a burst finish.

After running mine with a wrap that covered most of it for a couple years (beer sponsor), I took all that off and have been running a black guard similar to yours. I also have the tort as I thought that might work but ultimately opted against it.

And I went so bold as to permanently attach it with screws. Meh.

I had doubts about the tortoise shell on this model but that really pops! Now I'm tempted.

I didn't do screwholes, didn't want to commit that far, at least not yet. But I don't see myself ever not using one at this point.

Yeah. I did as you with the tort guard first and used double sided tape which worked really well but when it came time to put one back on, like you, I decided it will never NOT have a guard so may as well make it permanent. And I'm back in a black guard phase so opted to go with that instead of the tort the second time around.

This is how it lived in between. Then we lost our sponsor so off it came. :thumbsup:

Nice job on Sledgehammer; hard tune to pull live, and the octave pedal helped thicken that up!

I was already in a conversation with Steve Pirruccello about other Lākland stuff, so I asked him about the retainer bar. He said he would ask Carl. Here's what he said that Carl said. I copied the message.

From Carl:

The bar should be cranked down so that the strings as they come from the tuners are parallel to the surface of the headstock. If the strings bend over the end of the fingerboard small accommodations should the filed under the string path. The string slots in the nut should be filed to agree with the string path. As to changing strings. After loosening the strings one should remove the bar retainer. After winding the new strings loosely, replace the bar retainer making sure to spin the screw backwards to find the threads before driving them in. Rough tune the instrument then adjust the height of the retainer. Finish tuning

Add me to the list of those that are surprised this is their intention but I'd never remove it when restringing. I don't recall adjusting mine but I'll have to go look at it to see the angle of the strings in relation to the headstock now since I'm curious.

I much prefer the quick release style retainers (and bridges if anyone was asking), but I'm not going to replace any bars.
