Dan, you have no idea how hard of a decision it was to put the AJ on the block... and I'm glad it went to you! That AJ fretless is really one of a kind with the coating from Pat Wilkins... really sings, it's a great bass, but I just wanted to go back to 4 string passive for my fretless... and it's on it's way tomorrow!

PS... the AJ has dunlop strap locks already installed- I through the strap parts in the case for you as well!

Grats on the new bass! This is killer man, really like it so far and can't wait to play it at rehearsal next week. I did find the strap locks thank you.

Happy to return to the owners group. Picking up a bass today from Onedertone. This will be my fifth Lakland and hopefully I will hold on to it. All my previous Laklands were fantastic instruments, especially my 55-02! Really miss that bass. I sold two to help pay for one of my Fodera's and the other two, people offered me more money than what I paid for them so they went..lol I'll post some pictures of my former basses and the new one. Very excited about it. It's a fretless AJ5.

So, I should probably come clean with you guys. My 55-60 that I was thinking of putting a preamp in is fretless. I do, however, have a 55-01 with a bound and blocked neck that I was going to switch out with the fretless 55-60 neck, making the 55-01 the fretless and the 55-60 a Jazz with a blocked and bound neck. I have a thing for blocked and bound necks and I really like my basses to sound modern and hi-fi, hence the preamp idea. I'm just not much of an old school guy. And I really have been jonesing for a Lakland Jazz style bass. I already own a 1997 55-94 that is the absolute best bass I've ever owned. Well, I played the fretless 55-60 at practice last night and, honestly, it was probably the most fun I've had playing bass in a long time. That thing was awesome! What a cool guitar! I've messed around with fretless in the past, but was never really very serious about it. Last night I felt like a fretless player! It was amazing! So now I have a different problem...I need to find another bass to put that blocked and bound neck on. For whatever reason, the 55-01 and I just don't seem to gel. It plays good and sounds fine, but I just don't feel any affinity toward it. Maybe it should be the one to get modded? Any suggestions? I'll post a family picture when I get home from work. Thanks guys.

I know a lot of people don't like the -01 and -02 preamps and end up swapping them out, and I know others don't like the pups in the -01. If it's the tone, then start with the preamp swap. If it's the playability of the bass, no amount of modding will fix that. As for the fretless, I'd say take it active and based on what you've said you'll like it even more!

I see your 5594 has Basslines. Cool. My long standing #1 was a 99' 5594 with Basslines. I friggin loved that guitar. Unfortunatley, I had to let her go a few years ago. My hand and 5 string guitars just dont jive anymore. It hurt letting her go. I mean I've flipped a lot of bootek guitars over the years and none of them could come close to that Lakland. Ive spent the last few years trying to recreate that same bond I had with my 5594, but now with a 4 string. After a few flips I've landed a 98' 494. My 494 had the typical Bart/Bart setup. I yanked it and installed a VVT passive system with Aero pickups. MAN O' MAN what a bass!! I mean the bass sounded great before the electronics swap. Now it just sounds amazing in the mix. I get compliments on it all the time. The Aeros are everything you wished the Basslines were. There still agressive sounding pups, but just more refined. Point being, maybe what your 5501 needs is a pup swap? If it sounds good unplugged, than it's worth a shot. Try it passive too. Order a new set of pups and take it from there. And yah, highly recommend aero. They're not cheap. But they sound awesome.

Very cool!!! why the term "come clean"?? Fretless basses are awesome! Active ones are just as cool! I am having an active 55-60 defretted as we speak.....

I too find fretless basses "freeing" to play.....love the different sounds you can get and the feel is just way cool.

I have a Skyline 55-60 (now also a fretless - but with a rosewood fretted neck as well) that I might be talked into parting with. Here is a picture:

It might look sweet with a B&B neck!

You would then have a fretted and fretless 55-60!!!

You would have to buy the Bass and both necks but hey....you can always sell one neck... :)

The only "issue" is that the RW neck does not have any hardware now....

Yes! I like the Basslines, but the bridge is a Norstrand MM. I, too get compliments on my tone all the time! Certainly it is the bass more than me. That thing is a dream to play! Oh, BTW, it is a 1997.

I think "come clean" was probably more for me than you guys! While I've been searching for a fretless for a while, secretly, I hoped I didn't like it very much, so I could switch the necks between the 5560 and the 5501, guilt free. The reality of the situation is, the 5560 is a wonderful fretless and, at this point, I couldn't imagine switching necks. So I'm left with the 5501 that I just haven't really bonded with, but I really like the bound and blocked neck and want to have it on a bass I'll play...so maybe a 5564 to switch necks with or maybe just mod the 5501 until I find the right combination.

I've been a Lakland fan since I first laid eyes on my Classic 55, but never pulled the trigger on any others until recently. I do, however, lament that I don't have a 5 string Scheff and a LOG 5564 or a Black DJ5, but one day...Being from Washington State, Mike Lull country, I've had 3 Lulls and as nice as they are, they just don't move me like my 5594. thanks for all the feedback.

I still consider myself a Lakland newbie and the complete opposite of a do-it-yourselfer. Had my Glaub for about a year and have not "treated" the neck and fingerboard. It's strung with Labella flats so no string changes. Do you just loosen the strings and treat or does that "hurt" string life? How often should the neck/fingerboard be treated? Thanks . . .
