Almost a year and a half after selling my last Lakland, I just snagged this on eBay - should land later this week. Threw what seemed to me like a ridiculous lowball offer at the seller, and to my surprise they accepted (maybe I should have gone lower!). It's a MIK 55-02 in candy apple red, with the Bartolini electronics. Have always loved Lakland's CAR, now the challenge is to see whether I have better luck with the 35" scale and 19mm string spacing than I did the last time around.
Congrats. Nice bass. It may take some time but you'll get it if you REALLY want to. Desire is a stronger force than we give credit to.

Funny, I came back to my Lakland's exactly because of the 35/19 spec. And, worst case, if'n you don't bond that should be an easy sell. Low risk trial.
Thanks - that's what I'm hoping! I spent a lot of time and am the most comfortable on Music Man 5 strings, which are a pretty different beast. But patience is key - probably gave up too soon with my last 55-02.
Exactly - best case scenario it's a smooth transition and I play happily ever after, but you're right - this probably wouldn't be tough to flip for something else. I'd really like the GAS train to stop for a little while. It's been a like a hurricane around here lately!

(Man the older I get, the more I find myself saying what the old cats use to say to me). IMHO we cause our own storms by own choices. I'm the biggest culprit in that arena for sure
. My musical journey changed when I kicked out of my mind that i always have an escape if I don't like it. I really believe that, that's the reason the bassist from the 60's and 70's were SO incredible to where we are still in awe of their art. They worked with what they got because someone was late with inventing the internet

Good points all around, and definitely the right mindset. I usually like to pretend there's some "issue" with whatever I'm playing to justify the churning seas of GAS that I find myself navigating frequently. Nothing wrong with that, and it's been a blast playing a variety of different things over the last few years, but I'm thinking it's time to focus and get back to the "making music" part of my life. What better way to kick that off than with a P bass and a beautiful 55-02?
Dammit Man great minds think alike. Just picked up another 63' re-issue (owned 2 before and got to chasing that sound monkey only to keep coming back). Along with my Lakland Jazz (pic a page back), I fear no evil cause the funk is with me! Hahaha
Okay I found a new toy... A Japanese-made SK5DX. Excellent condition, excellent price. I am excite. I can't find much in the way of soundclips though. Anyone familiar with them? Same pup configuration as a 55-02 but it has Duncans.
It's here!!!....and it is one hell of a bass. The neck is to die for! Has some flamey goodness. The pickups which I believe I was told were Neos have me perplexed! It sounds like a fine P should, I'm just not sure if I hear what people have described when they talk about Neos.

Sweet! Ironically, I'm building the exact same Coral, rosewood and tort p bass, but not a Carlo.
My DJ4 is now sporting the DJ-Retro preamp. I bought it from hotwire-bass.de in Germany. Inhaber Bert Gerecht is a pleasure to do business with, very quick to respond to my emails.
Mounting the preamp wasn't too difficult. I did have to remove some wood from the cavity wall at the active/passive switch. Other than that one little surprise with the pickup wiring, they are wired red/black and green/black. I assumed the black wires to be both ground and the red and green ones signal. Hooked up this way I got an out of phase signal. Weird. Swapping the wires on one pickup restored the familiar J-bass sound.
Soundwise it is a big step forward, great sounding preamp. The mid sweep is cool to have.

Awesome! What pickups are you going with? Is it a straight up rosewood board or are you doing binding or blocks?

My 44-60 is coral pink and i live in the ATL. At 6'5" & 300 lbs with with coral pink shoes on??? Not a good look. Not good at all. But seriously, nice bass. Enjoy.

Your install mirrored a couple previous that I had done. Phase issue on one and had to put some relief in the cavity on a couple for a better fit. Congrats on your stellar choice and successful install. They don't come any better IMHO for that bass. Just put another one in my PJDJ5
"Carlo" is the (fancy word alert) imprimatur of Carl Pedigo, former head luthier at Lakland who now splits his time between Lakland work and his own building/repair work; he works one floor down from Lakland's main shop. He's a superb craftsman and a great guy. Welcome to Chicago Bass Doctor
GregC is right, but also, if you're really asking about technical differences, the neck profile is slightly thinner front to back. He's a good guy.
Just straight Rosewood and dots. I am going to install the Aguilar AP-60's. They should be here Thursday. I did a total 60's spec on it down to the cloth braided wire and oil/paper capacitor. I want a Pino vibe.
I have Duncan Antiquities in my Duck Dunn and love it with flats. This build will sport rounds. I'm giddy.
