Lakland Owners Group #69

Being from Indonesia, you SHOULD be proud! The Lakies coming out of your country are (overall) VERY nice basses.
I have owned several Skylines and US Lakies and can say that the Skylines are very nice (out of 11 Lakies, 2 are Skylines).
However, I will tell you that US necks are super comfortable and fast.
The main differences you can have in a US 55-94 are:

1) neck feel and quarter sawn vs flat sawn
2) more wood top and color choices
3) potentially lighter bodies (I say that because lately Skylines have been coming out lighter than in the past)
4) nicer fretboard wood and the potential for blocks if you special order

The electronics are identical...

Overall, I would say you should make the jump - as you know, yo can get a fairly nice Stingray sound out of an -02/-94 and (IMHO) the neck on the Lakland is more comfortable.

Let us know what you decide....

Haven't played this guy in a while... Threw on a fresh set of strings curteousy of the LOG (thanks, Doude and co!) and took it to church this morning. It's feeling great.

It's a skyline, factory dark stars. Originally inca silver, I had Marty Bell paint it olympic white. Sent it to Carl Pedigo to rewire it and to replace the nut which was cut HORRIBLY from the factory. It's now bone, and perfect, of course. He also installed a maple neck shim that was originally some janky piece of metal, assumedly also from the factory.

The neck feels better in terms of playability than the U.S. HB I owned. I'm probably going to remove the satin finish on it and replace the tuners to give it that true U.S. feel.

Glad I brought her out today!

Holy ****, Lee, that is amazing!

Waaay back when we were first kicking around the idea of a LOG bass, we talked about a Hollowbody and various color options--oly white came up as one that would either be great or weird. It's clear now how awesome that combo would have been.

The 55-94 that I'm after has Bart instead of LH3 pickup. I love LH3 on my 55-02 which IMHO can closely mimic P, J & MM. Any though about the difference between these two pickups?

I personally prefer LH3 to Barts. I also have a 55-02 which I really like. While 55-94 are better as Doug said, 55-02 are still great basses. If I were you, I would keep 55-02 and instead spend money on something else, like amp or speaker.

The barts with the bass and treble 80-90% of the way up have about the same tonal balance as the lh3s. Barts are ultra low midrangey. I went back and forth a half dozen times and ended up thinking the barts were better overall and the lh3s were brighter and more balanced but had less "i dont know what". Either one is perfectly workable, great basses.

Never played any MIA Lakland before but the MII I have is miles ahead of any MIA Fender and Musicman I've came across. So "real" Lakland should be better.
Being an Indonesian, I'm very proud of my 55-02. Not an easy decision to part with that bass.

Hi my fellow country mate!...:D

I would believe that US Lakland is better, but is it worth it?, tell you the truth, I don't really know since I do not own any of US lakland, but I do know this, I can't get stingray sound out of my 44-02 and 55-02, they just...different.

Thank you guys, so 55-02 will stay. But my Stingray will go anyway, I don't see any need for it anymore. Perhaps I can use the money to get a 44-64. and the 55-94 which I was about to snag is sold, there's another one but too pricey for me.

Bro Endy, yes they're different as imho 55-02 is better in every aspect (except perhaps the resale values) compared to a Stingray.

Ahhh....then that changes things. the Bart is not as variable as the LH3. I find the Barts a bit "darker sounding" and not as much high end.

I had a Bart loaded bass and, although it did sit well in the mix, I was not as fond of the sound as I was of the LH3 (which I had in my amber 55-02) so I sold it. The bass ("Tabby") was a GREAT playing bass and I regret selling it.

What kind of sound are you after? Have you tried he Barts?
