Black is supposed to be a standard color for the 55-64 isn't it? I have never seen one though. @mark beem just went ahead and had one painted. The one in the picture is photo-shopped I think.

Black is standard on the Skyline 44-64...NOT the Skyline 55-64 (If I have my facts correct)...as of now, the only color for a "stock" Skyline 55-64 is 3 tone burst...

Double E is correct. The bass was originally sunburst and I sent it to Sean for the refin. The bass on the wall in the pic with the two basses was shopped.

It would be interesting if you were able to persuade them to put an unlined, US, neck on a skyline. I can think of why they wouldn't want to though, at some stage it could get sold on as a completely US bass by someone unscrupulous.

I'm already thinking of getting another Lakland Skyline but I am torn between the 44-02 and 44-AJ. Would the 44-02 be able to replicate the tone of the 44-AJ?

I notice that there is a volume difference between the 44-01 & 55-01 when I switch between them (44-01 is louder). Both have new strings and pickup heights are the same. Any ideas on getting them both equal?

44-02 will sound much different than the AJ because of the humbucker. With the neck single-coil pickup soloed on the 44-02, you can get close, maybe halfway there, but limits your tonal options from there.

I'd love to have an unlined fretless neck installed if it were possible. And although I have no plans to sell it, the thought of someone at some point trying to pass it off as a USA model is reason enough for me to just go for the lined rosewood board.

good point, I forgot about the switch, and to the wife, yeah they would probably sound similar enough.

Sorry GNL2000: no help on the volume difference.

There is a chance the onboard volume may be set differently. I forget whether that pre-amp has a volume you can set.

The LH3 which is in the 44-02 DOES have a variable volume "knob" on the pre-amp.

Even though you can get an active J bass sound out of a 44-02 I believe they would be very different since the 44-02 has the LH3 pre-amp and the pre-amp in the AJ is the same pre-amp as you have in your 44-01 and 55-01.

If you want active variability.... I would go with a 44-02....most people truly love the LH3/Hanson set up on the -02/-94 series.

BTW - gorgeous pair....one more classic and one more modern.

May be rosewood or ebony....not sure what they have in stock.

As for unlined...would have to be a US neck....much more pricey as well....

55-94 arrived on Saturday and it's AWESOME! Still getting used to a bigger fretboard after not playing a 5er since September and my Will Lee Metro is absolutely dinky comparatively speaking. Preamp is solid and I find the tone fairly similar to the Sadowsky; you can get a really nice growl out of this for sure. Low notes are fantastic, and I like the tension on the B, especially relative to my old Warwick Rockbass (different beast, but nonetheless). Between the two guitars, I feel like I have an M3 and an X6 in the garage; both have serious motors, but one is a little more nimble, and one can do some serious lifting when the situation calls for it. I see splitting a lot of time between them. I may switch out the preamp knobs for the bigger Sadowsky type ones. These are a little small for me.

Weighs in at 9lb even.
