The LH3 which is in the 44-02 DOES have a variable volume "knob" on the pre-amp.

Even though you can get an active J bass sound out of a 44-02 I believe they would be very different since the 44-02 has the LH3 pre-amp and the pre-amp in the AJ is the same pre-amp as you have in your 44-01 and 55-01.

If you want active variability.... I would go with a 44-02....most people truly love the LH3/Hanson set up on the -02/-94 series.

BTW - gorgeous pair....one more classic and one more modern.

as for "would the wive notice a difference in tone with the 44-01 and 44-02" I would say YES!

I just check to see if there was a gain adjustment on the pre-amp and there wasn't. I did notice that the nothing looked the same between the 44-01 (new) and the 55-01 (used) so I think that the pre-amp was changed out by the previous owner(s). That explains the volume difference between the two.

My wife doesn't understand why I have 3 motorcycles (Harley, sportbike and city bike) because she thinks they are all the same so slipping another bass pass her probably would be frowned upon at the moment. I'll just have to wait until vacation :D

Does anybody know of any shops in Las Vegas NV that sells Lakland?

Makes sense on the different or amps.... Any idea what is in the used one?

I know your pain....i am a collector of laklands and Carlos and my wife does not understand....

Mark, I have a Skyline 55-60 with a lined fretless neck and it is a very nice neck! Just really well made. As a bonus, the lines are not even noticeable from the audience.;)

No idea on what is being used. I am thinking of going with Aguilar OBP-3 and some different pickups but I am going to hold off for a while.

I checked Lakland's dealer list and saw that one also. Unfortunately, there aren't even used ones available coming up on their website (national).

I have owned this 55-02 for a little while now and I am happy to say that I really love it. It's giving my main bass a run which is funny because it's the complete opposite (a 30" 5 string Callowhill Pbass). I struggle to choose which one to bring on a gig, even to the point of telling myself I can cop that Pbass vibe with the neck p/u. The 55-02 plays so well- I am playing runs on it without even thinking, stuff that I just don't pull off on the other bass. I may change the knobs on the 55-02, maybe just the volume and p/u as I use those a lot and I am used to a bigger surface. My only wish was that it had some kind of passive rolloff- I am rolling off the treble and adjusting the mids to get close to a vintage tone.

I am starting to comb through the Lakland club threads but does any have pics or can link pics to 55-02 with different knobs?

So I got this bass on TB, the info below was from the previous owner. I need to take it in to get it shielded as it is noisy as hell, I did not expect that for an active bass. I have done a couple of shows and did not really hear the noise on stage nor did I get complaints for house/soundman but it's very apparent when recording. My Pbass is dead quiet.

03 Korean made Skyline in Inca Silver 8.4 lbs
Nordstrand pickups (nj5s and mm5.4) and Preamp (3b-5a)

The MM pickup is wired in series and the onboard switch is not connected (another thing I needs to get taken care of).

Pics below. The guys in my latin band love this bass, I turned some heads at our last show when I dug in on one of our songs. It's an aggressive bass and I am liking that!!!

This was one of the original colors offered....its a sweet color!

The first one in this color I ever saw was a bass player in a Dave Mathews Tribute band playing at a bar I was at years before I knew what Lakland was...I thought it was a great looking and sounding bass but never got around to talking to the bassist...only realized after I started getting into Lakland what it was.

I have a 44-02 with an LH3 pre and Lakland/Hanson pickups, and my bridge pickup is standard wiring, so this may not be directly applicable to your bass:

I've found that I can get a really good Jazz sound out of the bass with the pickup select on the front (neck) coil with the treble boosted 30-50%, and about a 10% bias towards the rear pickup. The Precision sound, for me, is with the coil switch to the rear (bridge) coil, treble boosted about 20%, bass up a touch, and pickup split about 70-80% towards the neck pickup. YMMV.
