Just go my first Lakland about a week ago. After playing nothing but a 6 string for many years I was itching to get a 4 and heard nothing but good things about them. Decided on a Skyline 44 02 because of the versatile pickup design. Sounds and plays great and I could definitely see upgrading to a USA in the future. Wanted to get a natural quilted maple deluxe but the wait was just too long. Always liked black anyway as my first quality bass was a black G&L El Toro. Definitely not disappointed, killer tone and wide variety of sounds. The strings that came with it are a bit stiff but I should have a set of Dunlop Super Bright Nickels for it by tomorrow. Having lots of fun reacquainting myself with a 4.

So, I have seen a couple references recently to "original" 44-xx or 55-xx pickguards. Has Lakland ever offered these models with a factory pickguard outside of a custom order?

I don't know if they have issued them with pickguards, but they used to have them available. I bought one directly from them for a 55-01 around 2003.

If you get a 44-xx or 55-xx "classic" it comes in solid color and a pickguard.

The "standard" comes with a translucent finish.

The "deluxe" comes with a translucent finish and a quilted maple top.
