Lakland Owners Group #69

I guess this is a good place to ask....
Does anyone here have experience with both, or at least A/B'd, a Lakland Hollowbody with an HB30? I just sold my 55-01 fretless and am thinking of either the HB30 (on days when Im playing my Danelectro a lot) or a Hollowbody 34" with Chi Sonic pups (when I'm playing the Warwick Corvette $$ a lot.)

Essentially it's a mixed question about scale and tone on a Lakland hollow.

has anybody tried out the geezer EMG pickups? I am thinking of getting a lakland P bass. Also I know they made a geezer EMG PJ and with that being said did they also make an EMG geezer Jazz set too? And does anybody have clips of there P basses with the EMG geezer pickups and how does it compare with the normal lakland pickups?

I recently posted on a thread where someone was lamenting a $1500 US Fender Jazz purchase. I suggested picking up a used US Lakland Jazz bass, which of course fell on deaf ears because everyone seemed to be Fender-philes. Many US Laklands sell used on TB for less than $2000, and I have found them to be excellent instruments. I own an early 4-string JO, as well as a custom Duck Dunn, each of which I paid less than $2k for. The JO is a '99 and the DD is an '09. I've not played any recent instruments and don't know if there has been any degradation in quality in recent years but my basses are excellent. IMO, you have to spend a lot more money to do much better. Does anyone know what variety of rosewood was used on the original JOs that came out? Also, the neck on the JO is carved differently than the DD, although the difference is minor. When I look at the Lakland site the various jazz models seem to be quoted with the same spec. (1.5" width at nut, 0.77" depth at 1st fret, 0.94" depth at 12th fret) Do all the jazz basses really have the same neck contour, or are the specs not telling the full story? I'd be curious to know. Or maybe they used to carve them differently, and now they have standardized...

Great to hear from you and your story!

US Laklands...like you say are some of the best instruments made!

The quality today is every bit as good as the early basses....

I believe ( MHO) that even the skylines give MIA Fenders a run for the money for sure!

The necks on the DJ s are different than the JO (4460) basses...the DJ is a compound radius... Not sure of the actual specific differences....

Regsrding the DD... The necks should be the same as the JO unless the original owner had them do something different.

Also... On the rosewood for the initial run... Not really sure... But it is very dark and excellent.

You can email [email protected] and ask... He can find out I'm sure.....

I do know that the initial UBER birds eye boards were wood Dan etal purchased from a contractor.... It was originally floor wood that was purchased for a project but never used.... Not sure how much they purchased... But it was alot...

here is a track I did with my skyline Osborn. It has TI strings and joe barden pickups. we just finished tracking the album and the only thing I wish I could of used on it also was a Bob glaub with those Geezer pickups! hahaha...:bassist::bassist:... I got so many tones out of just using that Osborn and a mesa power house 1x12 with a mesa walkabout and mesa big block 750. Lakland Forever!!!!
