I finger a Geezer 44-64 loaded with the P. Holdsg's audio is pretty spot on. I like dialing in just a bit of the treble and it punches through in the band mix nicely, with a taste of that Geezer grind.

Put a fresh set of DR Pure Blues strings on "Choko". Love this bass!! 
I wanted that top one so bad I ordered a custom one like it, with a few twists...and did own the Goldie for a while before selling it too 
Just found pics of two US Laklands I kick myself in the tush for ever letting go ...... sigh.........sniffle....
These were two that can never be replaced.... both were passive...Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking when I let go of these beauties...???

What's your take on the Lakland P5 pup and overall quality? Big difference from others in the field like Yamaha, MTD, Fender??
To all Lakland fanatics out there.
I have owned Lakland basses for the past 10 years or so and recently acquired a 44-64PJ, in superb condition, year 2015 in black. Superb bass, great feel as any Lakland bass and super Tone as well. The electronics however were not up to par, for instance, when turning off the P position pickups volume, I could still hear the Bass coming through. As well, it seemed that the tone was not fully 'exploited' and that the Bass kinda sounds 'muffled' a bit. I brought it to my favourite luthier who had a blast working on her.
He cut a new bone nut, installed CTS master vol tone pots, a Bourn blender pot, WD Music oil/paper tone cap, and copper shielded throughout. See pictures attached.
The Bass is simply amazing now. She is wired Volume / Pickup Blend / Tone which makes more sense.
The Tone is deep, deep deep with great sustain and definition. The P Tone really 'opened up' and both pickups blended render a juicy unique Jazz Bass Tone !!! The Bass is as quiet as she has ever been !
Honestly, this is as good as it gets and if you want to make a few electronics upgrades, this route may be one way to go, not saying it is the only one to consider as there might be other options too!

Don't know if this was directed at me, but IME, the 55-64 pickups are great. Very aggressive and high output. I used my standard 55-64 for my prog band's EP. It, coupled with my Sansamp VT Bass pre, sounded monstrous. The only thing I've owned that comes close to it is the "Fender Original Precision" pickup I have in the "Pino Palladino" bass I had built.

I am not sure about how it worksm I fully trust him. Is it usually the case to do that?
I have no way of knowing what "usual" is across the country, but if the grounds are not contacting the shielding, then they are not actually working as shielding. This is why there is a little ground wire running from your control cavity to the bottom of the bridge - it grounds the instrument as a whole.

I have both the retro/vintage p 5 and the neo punch p5..
Like them both alot for different reasons.
Unlike the previous poster I have never had any issues.
The retro is very much like a fralin..
The neo punch is punchier and more hi Fi...
