I have been thinking of having the seller pay for the repair. If I decided to go that route how would I know that something else could be bad?

The electronics are definitely the weak point on these basses...still unusual to have a problem of this degree though. I am with Texan in the thought that it is probably a loose connection or a bad pot. These are minor repairs really and shouldn't be too costly. Obviously it will take some time to troubleshoot to determine if anything else may be wrong.I have been thinking of having the seller pay for the repair. Man, I feel for you Shaun. It's a big disappointment when something like this happens… I know you put a lot of time and effort into researching this purchase. When I get home from work I will check.
Thanks
Shaun
Yes, he mentioned that the single coils are not hum cancelling, and do risk hum if soloed. The reason for this is the 5er set is "split" at the A string on order to eliminate any hum... if you go to single coils... Your A may be more pronounced but you MAY experience a bit more hum...
Luckily I never have this issue... I use my A string ALOT and the volume seems "about right".
However ... I trust Brian emnensly... He knows of what he speaks... he is a great guy with lots o knowledge...

I never noticed it before, but I started trying to play more walking/jazz stuff and now it irritates me![]()
So I ordered a 55-94 just over a year ago in Oly white with matching headstock, rosewood fretboard, pearl blocks and it is simply ridiculous. Received in January of 2016 and loved it from the first moment.
Fast forward a few days and I naturally ding the forearm area. Okay, no biggie, that will wear in eventually. Put a touch of oly white touch up on it, which naturally doesn't match, but it's hidden. Fast forward a few months and something got loose in my Gator semi-hard case and there is a long gouge in the paint down to the wood on the back by the bolts and on the bottom edge. No idea what caused it, but they were all the same, so totally my fault, and no idea how they got there.
So eventually this starts to bug me, I bought probably 7 shades of off-white paint pens to try and fill it in, but that doesn't work because they don't match. Finally email Leo who responds instantly and says "that's awful to hear; send it in and we'll repaint it" and I get a prepaid Fedex label from Brain a few minutes later. Send it in to these guys and literally 31 days later, it is back in my hands and looks as good as new with a full repaint, buffed up neck and new strings.
And here's the kicker; no invoice. I send a note back to Leo saying I received the bass, but don't know what I owe him. He responds with "there's no invoice because you don't owe us anything. We appreciate our customers and want them to have the best looking and best playing basses they can have."
Holy crap. What service! This on top of giving me a discount on the original purchase because they got busy in production and I got my bass in 7mo instead of 6.
Currently trying to figure out how to send the shop a nice gift (e.g. beer of the month, etc) or something else (open to ideas). Just wanted to share that with everyone. Not sure I'll ever need another bass, but you can bet your butt I'm buying a Lakland if I do.![]()
