Congrats on the bass! Sorry, the MK1s are sealed with epoxy, you can't remove the covers.
The good news is, a couple manufacturers source these pickups with wooden covers as standard...I beleive the MTD Kingston series use MK1's with wood covers, and these do occasionally show up in the classified section here. They may require some tweaking of the pickup route though since the radius of the corners is smaller.
You can also do what was done to my Warrior, which is get a thin veneer of your choice and affix it to the top of the covers.

Update on the neck swap- got the 55 0x neck from Mark Beem this evening- and didn't start surgery until around 10:30... Holes lined up perfectly (Korean neck and indo AJ body) but quick filled with dowel anyway... Then thought I'd just move the hardware over... Well if I moved the hardware I should bolt it back on.... If it's bolted on might as well string it to pitch... And if it's already strung to pitch might as well set it up... Low and behold 2 hours later she plays and sounds great!

So I noticed my 55-94 has the weak A string (Lakland p/u's and LH3 electronics). I emailed Lakland, and Brian got back to me super quickly, he offered to swap my stock hc pickups for single coils, which he says he prefers and are punchier. Sounds good to me, as I usually have both pickups on, but has anyone else had these single coil pickups?

Yes!!! Do it! I put the single coil versions in when I had the same problem with weak strings. I have never looked back! The humbucker becomes a little less Musicman, but your jazz bass sounds will kill!
The reason for this is the 5er set is "split" at the A string on order to eliminate any hum... if you go to single coils... Your A may be more pronounced but you MAY experience a bit more hum...
Luckily I never have this issue... I use my A string ALOT and the volume seems "about right".
However ... I trust Brian emnensly... He knows of what he speaks... he is a great guy with lots o knowledge...

Yes my maple boards are a bit more"punchy".. But to quote my great friend Tom P " out there it all sounds like bass"..... The typical person has no clue and Will not hear the difference
So I received my used Lakland 55-01 yesterday. Well.... The front pickup does not work. The bass is making hissing and popping sounds. Bummer!! Can it be fixed or should I get a refund. Got it from reverb from a private seller.

Send it back. Yes it could be fixed but if you go that route make sure the seller pays.
If I otherwise liked the bass, I would keep it and fix it. Perhaps ask for a partial refund.
My guess is that either the blend pot is bad or one of the wires from the neck pick up came loose during shipping. If you have a soldering iron, it's probably an easy fix.
