Lakland Owners Group #69

I play a 55-14 and a thumb bolt on 5. The Lakland is the best neck I've ever felt. Nothing has come Close in my experience.
In all honesty, I had a Modulus Genesis 5 that had a neck that I liked just as much as my laklands... but 1) Really great Genesis (Genesi?) aren't that easy to come by, 2) the body and electronics options with Lakland more than put Lakland over the top.

but if anyone sees a spalted maple Genesis 5 floating around, give me a shout... I'd do compromising things to have her back!

These necks do not always fit every other model 55-01.... Korea, Indo etc...
I've swapped necks 3 or 4 times across as many basses from both Korean and Indonesian eras the holes may not match perfectly, but they need to be filled with a hardwood dowel and re-drilled. The Skyline AJ, 55-01 and 55-02 are all the same dimensions. the only one that is not is the Daryl Jones...

holes not matching is not fitting in my world

Whats the preamp/cover plate setup you have there on that and on your sparkly friend hanging on the wall in the back???

It's an old school stack knob setup! Basically 2 stacks, volume on top of both, tone on the bottom. Pretty fun, very versatile, though in live situations or ones where I may be changing my settings on the fly I prefer the modern V/V/T. This setup is great for recording as it can be dialed into very specific spots :bassist:

It's a Lakland...if you like Nickles...try Lakland Nickles...or Lakland Stainless...I like them both.

Really like the "old" DR Marlus Miller strings (but I don't think they are made any more)....

DR still makes the Fat Beams, just not as the Marcus Miller signature sets any more

I agree on the Genesis necks- they are super nice. Never seen a spalt one though- got any pics? I had a flame top one that I foolishly traded, will get one back soon....

I sinned against the Lakland Gods, I traded my GK MB-800 for an 2000 American F****r Jazz in Aquamarine Metallic. I was intending to eventually drop ChiSonics in it, but after setting it up and doing the Lakland treatment on the neck, it sounds damn good. Very close to my DJ5. I will say that the MIA F****r and the Skyline Laklands are incredibly close in every way, but the Laklands win by a nose.

I wish I did...it's been um... 14 years? i've been trying to find some for years- I had to have taken them when I sold it on bass gear.com... It was right before I went through some marriage bs (the reason it was sold- and a pedulla rapture fretless...) wound up in a divorce 2 years later anyway. Ironically it was ordered by an employee at a dealer in Dallas that sold it because he had to pay for a divorce too! I reconcile myself with the thought that it was cursed

Well, if it's got bad mojo, then good riddance to it. They pop up every now and then, but I've never seen a spalt one...

Sounds like a great color Tex!!!

Love the comparison as well... speaks volumes when an import is as good as an MIA!

What kind of pickups or preamp or both can I install to make it sound like a jazz bass? Yeah, "jazz bass" is a general sounding term...just need it to pass a blind test so it sounds like a jazz yet plays like a Lakland.

Edit: the 55-01 that is.

since that has soapbars, if it was my money, I would want to move towards Nordstrand pickups, which would warm up the bass considerably, then decide to keep passive or add a preamp. pM me and I'll send you a link to some video of a non-Lakland Jazz I own with Nordstrands in it.
