Ok All, I just bought the 55-01 in Vintage Cream with maple board from Bass Central for $750. Brand new!!!! Grass Hopper is awesome!!! I will post pictures when I receive it.

I had the opportunity to stop in at Bass Central recently. I met Grasshopper, he's a quirky but knowledgeable dude...he let me try out a few high dollar instruments including tweaking the setups for me. That place is a real treat to visit for a bassist. They have many nice instruments on display including Fodera, MTD, Dingwall, Alembic, Sadowsky and more.

This was on the day I had heard of the passing of Tim Cloonan of CallowHill Basses. I mentioned my shock about the event and Grasshopper said he never heard of CallowHill which was odd because I didn't think CallowHill was that far off the map and that surely, folks at a bass specialty shop would know about them. He basically said that "wannabe" builders come and go all the time and he can't keep track of them all.

They have lots of Laklands in stock but, other than a couple Skylines, non were on display. I asked to see a 55-94 with a Redwood top which Grasshopper was happy to pull from the warehouse for me. I played it through a Mesa Subway rig. Bliss. Overall great experience there, I would be very comfortable buying a high end piece, or anything really, from them.

Every time I've made a purchase from Bass Central, it's been great. Haven't dealt with Grasshopper though. I've always talked with Mike Amico. Smooth transactions every time. Even when I've sent something back it's been quick and hassle free. Really really REALLY fighting the urge to get one of these from them!

The first two digits. For example: 15xxxxxxx would be a 2015

I started making a pickguard template to fit a DJ5 today. I want a pickguard that incorporates the control plate so that I can have a single color. Still have some shaping to do. We'll see how it goes...

My current lineup. I've had the DJ longer than any bass I've owned. The DJ is an 04' and currently has the Aguilar hum-canceling pickups and is killer. Just got the 5501 for a few weeks ago and it's awesome! Needs a little work but it's great. It's an 03'. I had a red Duck Dunn with a custom tort guard, but I regrettably sold it. Lakland for life!

I didnt have enough material length to make single pickguard, bit had enough to make individual components so Imade two new templates. One for the actual DJ5 pickguard and one for the control plate. I really like the look of the matching components, even though the with the white pearloid the bass looks too wholesome now for my tastes, not evil enough. I want black glitter, which I'm going to order as soon as i find it and do a single guard. Not bad for a first try...

Here is the original look...its amazing how much the pickguard makes a difference in the look.

Another one of my recent upgrades... I switched out the Aguilar DCB's in my customized 55-60 with Nordy Fat Stacks. Really for no other reason than to experiment. I liked the DCB's but I think I favor the Nordstrands, they have a little bit more of an "open" sound.

New Lakland owner here. Just got this Natural/Rosewood 44-14 delivered. Great fit and finish and I'm still getting a handle on the preamp. Now I understand all talk about how comfortable these necks are.

I thought I'd pass along some killer deals going on right now for a few Lakland USA 44-14 models over at amazon.com. Get 'em before Amazon raises the prices back up (which I've seen happen many times over the years)! No affiliation of course. In looking at the Lakland site, it appears these colors have been discontinued (I only see three colors on the 44-14 page): Lake Placid Blue, Black and Tobacco Sunburst. No affiliation.

So I've been informed lol. I find it interesting that several custom shops are pleking all I've their hand made stuff right now. I read it in an iBass magazine article when they were interviewing Mike Lull. All of his hand made models get pleked.

If set up properly.. There is nothing wrong with a plek..... Also... It's very consistent.

However... The Luthier still needs to double check the work to make sure it's good.

I know lakland does that... And...I would think lull would as well
