I've seen a number of Lakland Shoreline basses on Reverb. Some have model numbers that start with SL although I think there's also a Joe Osborn and a PJ shoreline model at the moment. I'm curious what the neck profiles are like and some look like they have Lakland pickups, but not sure.
There are two lines made for the Japan market. One is the Shoreline series...those are close to our Skylines with the same hardware but alder bodies and the other is the Skyline Japan series which is what was mentioned earlier. Those are actually made in China and have budget hardware and electronics. Closer to a Squier. The Shoreline are SL and the Skyline Japan are SK.
Good to know! I thought something was strange when I noticed the the Duncan Design pickups. So unless you can get an absolutely killer deal, don't bother w/ the SK series?

I've been thinking about trying fodera nickels for my 44-64. I've got the DR Pure Blues at the moment, which sound great, but I think they are a bit too flexible for my taste. My other ideas was to try DR Lo-Riders
The Lo-Riders have a nice stiffness to them hence their name you can get a nice low action with them

Always liked DR Sunbeams on my 55-94 and was able to use them by stringing through the bridge instead of through the body to make them fit. Still use them on my 44-02
The Lakland bridge is a nice bridge. I can't tell the difference stringing bridge or body. I still string through body though, cause I can.
IMO, after you pay the taxes to get it to the US, the Japanese series basses are rarely a good deal.
Pretty much this. I have lo-riders (nickel or steel depending on the bass- Nickel on my Joe Osborne, Steel on my 4-94) Steel Lo-Riders on my 55-AJ, I keep pure blues on my fretless 55-02... The stiffness of the lo riders is just amazing... I've tried D'Addario's and Kalium's recently but ripped them off within hours and put DR's back on.
Keep in mind if you're interested in flats, I've yet to find a brand that likes the through body break angle, and they well... break right at the bridge. I don't recall the lakland branded one if they did or not, only saw one pack of lakland flats in 6 years or so... but they were GHS i believe.
Ben Kenney is a loyal Lakland player and mostly plays flats. Last I heard his string of choice was Thomastik Infelds
TI flats are amazing if you like low tension strings and have a light touch...but they ain't cheap!

Very seldom do they come up for much less than a used Skyline model so I would steer clear myself unless it was in the less than $400 zone. Honestly I wouldn't pay more for a Shoreline than a used Skyline either. They are really comparable in all areas except the body wood. The Skylines are really nice basses.
You don't have to convince me! Pay no attention to the Squier in the middle
The only reason I'd go for a Shoreline is for aesthetic reasons (I love the trans blue over quilted maple and gold they have for the 55-02 and 44-02, respectively)
