Lakland Owners Group #69

Much to my dismay, this particular Lakland 44-64 did't work out. However, I've got serious GAS for a Lakland now, and will probably have one in the near future!

I greatly appreciate all the feedback, info, opinions etc. I completely understand the love for these basses, especially the US models!

Well got another 55-02 Deluxe on a deal I couldn’t refuse. Glad to have another Lakland in the herd again.

(Re-posting, hopefully with working image links this time....sorry about that.)

I am considering selling my two 44-01s - a spalted fretted and a 3TS fretless (fretless neck custom fitted at Lakland itself), which is a pretty rare bird. Both have been upgraded with Bartolini USA pickups (MK4CBC), Audere 3-band preamps and Dunlop Straplocks, so they have top of the line electronics on top of the already great playability of the 44-01s.

I figured I mention this to the group before I post anything the classifieds. PM me if you'd like to discuss the details of either or both.

I don't think this warranted it's own thread but what's the primary difference between the Skyline 55-60 and DJ5?

I hear that the 55-60 (old JO) has 60's position and DJ5 has 70's? The pickups look the same. Anything else noteworthy?

How's the JRetro preamp? It's a $400(CAD) upgrade from my dealer. I'd prefer to get a passive bass and a stompbox preamp but maybe I can be convinced otherwise?

I want a 5 string Jazz to be my workhorse and the Skylines seem perfectly in line with my needs.

The 55-60 has a larger body shape than the DJ. I do think the pickups are in different positions...not quite sure. I don't think you can go wrong with a 55-60. I have one strung with flats. I love it so much, I want another so I can string with rounds.

So the 55-60 is larger but lighter?

Sonically any difference? I like a warmer/darker jazz tone as oppose to an aggressive jazz

I really depends of the individual bass. I would est the weight range for the DJs are overall lighter than the 55-60. In my opinion the 55-60 has a more vintage jazz sounds, whereas the DJ is more modern. Both are great basses. I like the bigger 55-60 body style.

Are the upper frets just as easily accessible on the 55-60 as they are on the DJ? My local dealer had a DJ I tried last night and I was impressed that I could easily hit the upper notes even on to the B string.

Since there is no LOG anymore, nor Maternity ward, I will post my latest joy here.

This bass used to be for sale for very long time on German bass forum, I always liked it very much. I finally pulled the trigger - never had a 4-94 with SDs and I liked the look. There was one strange thing on the bass - no serial number on the headstock, just Dan's signature on the back. But there was a number written on the neck heel.
So I emailed Brian at Lakland and he told me, bass was originally made for Keith Duffy (The Corrs). So I contacted him regarding the bass and he told me, that Lakland made this bass for him with custom specked neck - it is chunkier than default 4-94 neck - it is similar to pbass neck. And that there was no number on the headstock, so Dan just signed it. And that the next owner of the bass was Yolanda Charles, who played on it with Joe Cocker, Robbie Williams live etc. So my detective work was worth! I love basses with interesting history.

Anyway, the bass is great example of early 1998 Lakland, with beautiful figured neck, superb playability and great sound (very different from Barts..). So happy with it.

To my ear, not much of a difference. They both sounded like Jazz basses...sorry, no help, I know. My DJ did have the East Preamp. It was very powerful. I would say a definite improvement, but I like active basses. YMMV.
