Skyline....but its from 2002.....its a great bass! Its been said (by others) that 2002 Skylines are the best.
In full disclosure, there are a couple of dings at the top of the fretboard (cannot photograph them)...my guess is that someone slipped with a file when doing a fret dress....but not for sure.
5 strings are hard to come by....

That is the Jerry Scheff Fiver that Jerry actually owned. His son or other family member put it on TB, but traded it in at GC for a guitar. That GC sent it to Michigan.
Yes it is....I wanted it when his son Darin was selling it but I thought he was asking a bit much.
For a while I owned Darin's Scheff (actually the 3rd one made but had sn 007).
Markus and G-man (???) also owned it for a while..I sold it to a Logger who kinda disappeared.

I keep getting GAS for a vintage P or a Ric but then I pick up my 44-01 and dial in a tone I haven't used for awhile and it goes away again. I'm constantly amazed at how good and versatile this (which is really an entry level) Läkland is.

Funny you should say that about a P and a Ric. I'm currently making a mid 80s American made (non Lakland) 51 P style bass into a Ric-like beast! It came stock with one HOT single coil in the P bass location, about 1/4" from where the Ric bridge pup is. I, just minutes ago, finished routing out a neck pickup spot under the 24th fret harmonic, where the Ric neck pup goes. I've purchased another single coil that matches the one that came in the bass, but is the reverse wind (hum cancelling). I'll put that pup at the neck and add a push/pull pot for series/parallel: 2 volumes, 1 tone w/ series/parallel option. It will be my version of a Ric with the option of sounding monstrous when I switch it to series.
Has anyone mod'd a 44-01 to have a neck pickup under the 24th fret harmonic? 3 single coil pickups in a 44-01 would be pretty fantastic!
I had considered both of those. The Scheff had two price reductions. That 55-14 was custom ordered and dumped fairly fast to someone who sold it to GC. The thinning of the neck raised my intuition to stay away.

Pretty sure you are correct. Sadly, looks like a rosewood 'board, which would make me hesitant to use roundwounds on it. Le sigh...
actually does not like like too bad of a bass. As for the Rosewood board you could always have Carl coat it with acrylic. I had him do that on a couple of basses myself

How does the acrylic affect the tone (besides the obvious jaco comparison)? How does it wear?
