Played my 5507 at church today... Had a song that really really needs a pick.

Now...I really suck at the plectum... Never been good at it but I got tired of playing this particular song finger style because the pick sound is so integral to the sound.

Just before church started I asked one of the guitarists for the thickest pick he had... It turned out to be a Fender medium pick.

I had to wait until the end of the service because the song was the last song of the service...

I had never played it with a pick before and had never played with a pick in public before... But I was like... What the heck...

It ended up sounding really good ( Imho).

I need to experiment me with the pick...

A new challenge!

My main pick for my basses is one that I made from a scrap piece of purpleheart wood. Its thick, but gives a great timbre than other normal picks.

I still have too many other weaknesses in my technique to work on. I can’t start working on picking with a plectrum. As Spock would say, it would not be logical. :-D

Got one last year. The link below is my first impression. Ergonomics are odd but I got used to it. Build quality is outstanding. Its a US but my understanding is the Skylines are very good in that regard. I love it but it's probably not for everyone.

He is the man, when it comes to picking a bass! And how the F does he get such loud harmonics out of a P bass?! Crazy!

When i was looking for one for my BG5, I hit many dead ends. Brian at Lakland said no one he was aware of was making them at the moment... good luck, I have one on my new to me 74 jazz and I love it!

I'm an old curmudgeon.... And darn proud of it!



But I do wish I could plectum better than I do.... So practice is required.

Also...I DID end up with a true double bass... So....???

But you do use a pick... Don't you?

And yes.. I've got many many flawed techniques but my ADD keeps getting in the way...I work on things a bit here and there.

One thing I've noticed lately though is that I'm experimenting as always but my " experimenting" had gotten more scientific and I think about it more... Just maybe ... Just maybe a bit of theory is sinking in... Ever so subtly?

I am a proud new owner of a Decade going back 2.5 weeks. Mine's a Skyline, picked up in a trade.

I put up a NBD post back then. I've played with it at rehearsal once and found it to be a lot bassier than my usual SB-2. The neck pickup really fattens things up. I did some recording this weekend with it as well and had to dial back the bridge and tone to smooth things out. The song called for a mellower sound and with the bridge PUP and tone dimed, it was too much.

It seems to get a barky/shouty tone when everything is maxed out. Using some finesse with the dials will really tame the sound you're getting. I'm excited to hear the recordings back. Hope to have some rough tracks by the weekend.

The physical aspect of the bass is a little weird. When I played a Sterling, resting on the bridge PUP was no big deal. Then I moved to an SB-2 and rode the bridge for a long time. Somehow, over the years, I've morphed into resting where a P-bass pickup sits. It's comfy!

Then this Decade rode into my life and now I have to be very thoughtful about where thumb placement is as it will definitely color the sound of your tone, which is impacted even more with the dials.

Initially I was thinking of flipping this bass to fund another one, but the more I play it, the more I'm starting to appreciate what it can do.

But I may need to lower the PUPs; I'm a heavy plucker and if I'm not careful, I get a lot of clicking and clacking. I also need to stick a toothpick in the strap pin at the bottom of the bass. I keep having to tighten the screw (swapped out for Dunlops).
