Just a matter of personal preference. No objective reasons, just feel older model have slightly nicer grain of the body and qs neck wood, I also like tinted necks and usually they have nice broken in feel.
I already had lot of both old and new Laklands, liked all of them, loved more from “early” era
Thats it.Seeing again that gorgeous BG5 in purple.. How does the BG5 having a 35'' neck and 1.81'' nut width sound compared to a standard BG4? I mean apart from the B string of course and having same body and fretboard wood.
I would love to find a used Lakland BG5! Its been on my wishlist for a while. I see a few used Skyline versions on Reverb, but I want the US version.
You can order a US BG5 anytime....new Skylines are Dodo birds (extinct and rare)....I would get one...
I love mine....both species...US and Skyline!
I think the BG5 sounds GREAT...
I personally think the 35" enhances the Open E as well as allows you to fret the E and Low D.
And
The way Lakland does it, its like a 34.5" not a true 35" ....
As an aside, I just measured my 55-64s...and they all seem to be 1.75" at the nut...i know I'm using a tape measure and not a caliper....but...
Yeah, new would cost me $3500. I’m looking to spend around $2200-2500 for a good used US model. Nothing against the Skylines...just want the US version.
Doug, you’ve said this before. And, it’s incorrect: scale length is determined by measuring from nut to 12th fret and multiplying that x 2. Sexual Chocolate w/ her 55-94 neck is exactly 17.5” from nut to 12th.... 35” scale.
You are correct in that it makes the open E sound better. The open A is better too, IMO/IME. I feel the D and G sound and play better at 34” or even shorter ala Ric. But, we can’t have it all, and fanned frets are not as easy to adjust to as people say, especially if you’ve been playing for over 30 years.
