I too run Dunlop Straplocks on all of my Laklands and all I've ever had to do is use a screwdriver - no issues.

I did not receive any keys with mine. And the bass (if new) will likely come with Lakland strings which are, in my understanding, rebranded GHS Boomers. I use them fairly exclusively; either Lakland nickels on my 55-02/55-14 or steels on one of my 55-60's (active). My passive 55-60 gets GHS Precision flats.
I think I've tried at least 60% of available string brands and types on my Laklands so far. A lot of what you like depends on multiple factors. For me my favorites are:
Flats, DR Legends followed by Labella DTF.
Rounds, Dean Markley Nickel Plated Blue Steel followed by DR Nickel Lo-Rider
Out of GHS offerings I've tried the Precision Flats, the Pressure Wounds and the Boomers. If I just stayed with the Lakland strings I could have bought another USA Lakland for the price of all those strings now that I think about it. Ugh.
Steels for me... always! I tried some D'addario nickels recently and was so happy when I swapped them for ProSteels. I was a DR user for years. But, I now put the 107-43 tapered ProSteels set on all my basses. I like a heavier E and lighter G and they last forever.

Have tried many brands myself. Used to use DR Low Rider stainless. Tried Ernie Ball Cobatls for a while, too stiff. Now my fav is Dunlop Super Bright Marcus Miller stainless, balanced from string to string, tone lasts, and flexibility is good. Love that ZING !
I actually like them more once the new wears off and my fingers quit sticking to them like they're sandpaper. I can't get the same tone out of nickels that I have to have to be happy.
I use DR Pure blues and Dunlop SBs.. I have a set of SIT Foundations that I am going to use eventually ..
Been digging flats lately. 55-01 with TI's and 55-02 with EB Slinky Flats. I am looking at trying some pressurewounds on the 55-02 though. Hoping to add some mids and brightness to it without going back to rounds.
They will and the tactile feel is better on the pressure wounds vs the half wounds where the grind off the outer part. Half wounds felt sticky under my fingers but the pressure wounds did not.

Playing my Carlo dual P again at a gig. Hot da** it growls so much!! Yeah I've said it before but I'm always blown away like day one, when I get to gig volume and hear it !
I'll second that first hand! That custom Carlo is awesome! The playability of that bass is very had to describe so you get a sense of just how good it is. Sound wise, a very unique instrument.

I recently picked up my first 5 string, and my first Lakland. A 1999 55-94 "Classic" in candy apple red. It's lovely, the neck is great and it's been easy to make the transition from 4 to 5 strings.
Typical Bart pickups, more processed sounding (in a good way) - The preamp is a bit odd. Setting it at 250Hz mids gives a massive punch when boosted and there's loads of variety in that, but cut at all the whole sound of the bass seems to go. Tried it at different settings and the highest frequency one worked quite well at adding high mid definition, and giving a more scooped tone when cut... but that 250Hz boost just makes it sit just right in the mix so went back to that. It doesn't sound as 'nice' as my Sadowsky Metro will lee 4 string, but with a slight boost of the mids it sure does sit in the mix perfectly and sound great.
