Lakland Owners Group #69

Hey Everyone,

Ive posted a little bit on TB(not alot) and dont think Ive ever posted to LOG. Wanted to say hi, show my two laklands, and also see if anyone is kind enough to share any feedback or wisdom. I have two Lakland Precisions with the J Neck. A 2008 BG in Cherryburst with RW fretboard. And I recently just got a butterscotch 44-64 with maple fretboard. I posted my cherryburst as I am interested in mixing it up. I dont really see the value in having two basses that are fairly identical to me. So I posted the cherryburst for Jazz trades.Im doing this because for some reason the butterscotch just feels and sounds slightly better. Cant quite place it but its just slightly ahead of the cherryburst, even though that one has more bells and whistles(blocks and neck binding, and custom color). So its a playability/sound thing, not cosmetic. I'll upload a few pics and below is link to thread.

So my main question...A fellow TB'er and LOG member suggested I consider a conversion of the Cherryburst to a PJ. I am intrigued by this as I love this bass too, and emailed carl over at Chicago Bass DR to discuss this. I guess some options are replacing the P PUP or adding a J Bridge PUP. If anyone has any experience doing this, lessons learned and recommendations I would be grateful for any feedback, good or bad.

Very nice basses! I recently converted my Skyline Joe Osborn 5 to a PJ and it turned out exactly how I wanted. I kept the original bridge pickup and had a local luthier add the Lakland P5 pickup (which I got directly from Lakland) to the neck position. I would suggest contacting Leo at Lakland. He was very helpful in getting the correct parts. So I assume adding a jazz pickup to your precision should turn out similarly well.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. I reached out to Carl at Chicago Bass DR so would probably go with him and order pickups ahead of time. Any further feedback from folks and PUPS I should consider would be appreciated. Also wondering any thoughts on whether I should add bridge PUP or replace P PUP.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I have a trade pending for a Fender Custom Shop '64 Jazz. So I wont be converting it most likely after all.

I have 2 Lakland PJs....one was converted and one was spec'd that way...I would really recommend it!

any idea what kind of pickups in either bass?

The neopunch is a bit more modern...

I have Lakland Vintage pin one of the PJs and it REALLY sounds great!

Carl will do an excellent job ....I was just in his shop yesterday.

Look at that! Funkyebk is now OnederTone! I've been using Funkyebk for a dozen years, but alas I'm just not as funky as I once thought I was... But I do have "wonder tone" thanks to my Lakland's and Aguilar!

What, you thought it was pronounced Oh-needer? Darn.

Thanks. The Butterscotch has lakland PUP's, the Cherryburst has Fralins. I got some good offers(Fender Select, Suhr Jazz, Sandberg RV4, among others). I decided not to convert it after all, and I am trading the cherryburst for a Fender Custom Shop '64 Jazz Bass Relic. Very excited to have a nice P and now J to add to the mix.
