Hey guys, almost time for my 44-51M/Slab body (Cause it's awesome) to be completed......Question about pickups.....What the heck is the difference between the vintage pickup and the Neo punch? Voicing particularly is what I'm wondering.....I ordered the vintage pickup because I thought a 44-51M should have split coil with more of an old school mid heavy sound.....I heard Neo is glassy as hell and too modern sounding. I like high mids and less low bass frequencies, so I hope I'm close. Apparently vintage means low mids....which I usually don't like as much as high mids...

The NeoPunch is not glassy. It's very mid heavy. The vintage is more old school P-Bass low thump with lower output. The NeoPunch is higher output, but definitely mid-heavy. A number of folks have switched from the Neo to the vintage to get a more traditional P Bass sound.

Hmm ... now I'm really thinking about a vintage for my fretted 55-02.

Unless I'm missing something, you're mixed up. The Neo/vintage option is only for the p-basses.

No, I'm thinking of getting someone to mod my 55-02, replacing the J pickup with a P, then cover up the redundant routing with a pickguard. Probably tort or black.

What do you think ?

Personally, if I wanted a 5 string P bass, that's what I'd buy. I wouldn't mutilate a 55-02 for that purpose.

Except that of course if I modify the 55-02 I get 35 inch p-bass with a lakland neck, lakland pre, splittable MM in the bridge position, and a deep lakland cutaway on the treble side. And I'm pretty certain I wouldn't miss the J.

My view is that the NeoPunch is right in the middle of the mids and you can get some low mids and some high mids in addition to the mid-mids (??) but they're all mids. It's harder to get the thumpy deep lows with the NeoPunch. You will get very strong output and many useable tones however. It's just not really a traditional P tone. So it depends on what you want. YMMV.

I usually cut a little low mid and cut the bass frequency a good amount.....I like flat treble and high mid boost sound that's little thinned out....ONLY on a P bass for some reason.

Hmmm I'll have to look into that, it's been a while since I last toyed with this idea, can't remember what I found about the P pickup sweet spot.

I would think about a Skyline 55-64 then....IMHO....you can always add a pre-amp tot eh P if you need it....

You would get the same great 35" neck

not quite sure how the P and MM would interact....you may want to talk to a luthier or 2 (Carl Pedigo would be a great option) to see what they think before moving ahead.

see if they will change the order.....I assume the bass is not loaded yet... I agree....if you want punchier and sharper output..the Neo is what you want. the vintage has a Fralin like sound (which I love)...I have the vintage in 2 of my 3 Lakie P basses.

Man! Just wanna give a shout to Leo & crew for the great customer service I just received. Sent my bass in to be plek ran into an issue. But to make a long story short, quickly came up with two great options, picked one and bass is now shipping back to me. They just received bass yesterday too! Great communication and fast service....can't complain! Glad to be a part of the Lakland family.
