Lakland Owners Group #69

I've been using the Sunbeams on my 55-02, I trimmed off at least an inch or two on each string. They are plenty long enough. I think they sound and feel great also.

On another note, I just modified the midrange control in the preamp from 600hz to 900hz. I could not be happier!. I really love that lakland allows this type of customization on a mass produced bass. I am really loving the 55-02.

How does it sound after changing the mids on the dip switch?

It seems like that mid control seems to affect the bass and high frequency tone controls as well. I was dealing with a thinner sound on the original setting (bass was used, so I don't know if it was default). After the change I seem to have greater control on the highs and lows, the mids at 900hz seem to be just right to cut though the mix IMO. I was using the bass mostly in passive mode before, but I can use it in active mode now.

600Hz is the default according to this doc.

I'm patiently awaiting shipment, but I recently bought the Decade SS (Skyline body, US neck) thats been in the Classifieds. Once I read it belonged to Ben Kenney, I couldn't help myself. Dude is the reason I play bass so it was a worthwhile splurge. I'll be sure to post pictures once it arrives. I had a Decade previously, but it was just the regular Skyline. I recently bought a Hofner Ignition and fell in love with the SS life, so I'm more than excited.

I've been on general hiatus from TB for years besides the random Classifieds purchase - is Markus still around? Does he still post his beautiful wood floor pictures?

Interesting. I used a set of DR high beams on my DJ5 and I had to run the B and E string through the bridge as they didn't clear through the body. The other strings seemed to be fine through the body. Assuming that some of these measurements are equal, High Beams are the same lengths as Sun Beams and that the neck scale on the DJ5 is the same as the 55-xx series basses. I eventually grabbed a set of extra long D 'Addario nickles. All strings fit through the body. That being said I generally do prefer DRs.

I just emailed Jason at FretNation and he said the DR Sunbeams are 38”. I measured my 55-02 and through the body it’s 37”. So the Sunbeams should be good.

Question for all you Lakland players, I’ve got my eyes on a hollow body. One of the older models with the Bartolini pickups. Has anybody used it in a rock context with round wounds? I haven’t seen any demos that are using that sort of sound. I’m looking for something different than my other Basses but I’m not looking for a thud machine.

Has anyone tried Ernie Ball cobalt flats on their 55AJ or DJ/JO 5ers?
I have Labella Black tapes and they're ok, I'm torn between Fat Beams and the EB Flats. I want brighter flats, I have 760fls on my Pbasses, and the Ernie ball flats were great in my warwick streamer that I've since sold.

I think you could look at the EB Cobalts - just a tad too bright - I settled on the GHS Precision. Check out the thread, lotsa love over there. Praise Report: GHS Precision Flats

EB Cobalt Flats and Dunlop flats are nice and bright. They (to me) sound like roundwounds with the luxurious feel of flats... not for everyone or every bass, but a great option.

Hi guys. I’m a new Lakland owner. I was told to have a look in here. I don’t even remember the proper model for my bass... I believe it’s a 4407. Someone here had to tell me what mode it was. It has JU bucking Chi Sonics. Quilted maple. Plays like a dream. It’s the first four string I’ve played in a while.

I played it out for the first time at church today and it sounded so smooth.

Nothing beats the dope, gold Ostrich case, though.

Oh.... our very own Gecko 5 makes guitar straps, and many other leather and some non-leather goods. He has made an ostrich strap for me, as well as about 10 other straps that match different basses. He could make a strap that matches that case, or the bass if you want.
