Yeah, Darkstars with a pre is not a great combo. Ends up being way too midrangy and zingy. I actually don't even prefer the Chi singles with a preamp.
I finally got the black pickguard from Lakland. Perfect fit, as expected. This DJ5 has become my #1 bass.
My favorite pickup combination so far is a Lakland Hanson at the Neck, and a Nordstrand at the Bridge. Great blend of 60’s growl at the bridge & 70’s clarity at the neck, but the only issue is that I get some hum now. Not a grounding issue, just the 60 cycle hum noise, even with both on full. I may end up switching back to a matched pair. The bass is simply awesome.

Gorgeous bass.....slick, clean and understated....love it. I have never tried other pups in my DJ5s but I'd love to find an older one with the Aeros in it.....

Got my new Skyline 55-01 spalted maple top in. Gotta give it a proper set up but that's a minor thing. I really like it! Balance is great and the neck is everything I've come to expect from Lakland. Bought it used from TB'er BananaKing. Looks brand new!
