Not different. J sound always lacks something for me, or maybe has some frequencies I don't like. Not good or bad exactly, just not a tone that seems to work well for me. Maybe it's single coils. Not sure, I've never really chased down the road of pickup swapping. But perhaps I need to find some J shape pickups that don't sound like J pickups

In the meantime, I'll restate my position: I like the ergonomics, comfort, and playability of a Fender Jazz type bass. Especially the downsized ones like the DJ4 (Or I imagine the Sadowsky Will Lee. Someday..) Over the years, I've had a few different J type basses. I find the pickup locations very comfortable and flexible for anchoring my thumb for fingerstyle. The problem for me with Jazz basses is that I have a hard time getting tones that work for me in a band situation. The Jazz bass (single coil?) sounds that I can get that will cut through the mix are generally not sounds that work for most of the music I'm playing. While I love a great "barky" Jaco-esque bridge pickup sound, it just doesn't really fit for me. Same with a Geddy tone.
(Side note: The Dark Star, while currently my favorite sounding pickup, is the least comfortable for right hand position for me, due to that rounded surround as anchor the point. My right hand often cramps up at the base of my thumb when playing the DS Sea Monster for songs with fast tempo ostinato type basslines.)
Thanks man. I Played it with a little Motown/Funk band I sit in with sometimes and it killed. While it doesn't really do the Jamerson thing at all, it still cops a lot of great tones and made for some sweet sounding bass solos (including a slap one.. gasp!!!). Its a little heavy, but the way I wear my strap it was very comfortable and I played it all night and got plenty of compliments on its appearance.
