I’m going to check out my local GC and see if they have Cobalt flats. I think until I scratch this itch I’ll keep obsessing.
I picked up a set of EB Cobalt Flats for my Skyline DJ-4, gauge 45-100. First impressions - WOW!!! And I've never said that with a flatwound string before. Right out of the packaging you can feel the difference. These strings certainly have more flex to them. Strung up the bass, tuned it and simply perfect. As of now, I didn't need to tweak anything - intonation, neck relief, string height are all the same from the D'Addario EXL170s that were on there. Of course I'll keep an eye on those as the strings settle in and I play more. Tone is fantastic - even from string to string and you can certainly hear the round wound qualities.
As an added bonus, it comes with purple threads!! My favorite color and they look sharp against the maple headstock! Time to play and break them in!
PS. I did not follow Ernie Ball's stringing instructions. Is that really necessary?
PSS. Oh, and I strung them through the back of the bridge.
The “double loop” on the tuner is just a precaution. For actually any flat wound string. I’ve strung many sets both ways, with no incidents whatsoever.

This makes me happy!! Glad you are pleased! I’m also a huge fan of purple! I don’t use the EBMM method of string mounting, although I may try it some time, just to see if it makes any difference.
Dang B-stock email. Those purple GZR’s are too sexy!
I thought about this, if not for the black headstock, I may have blown some cash.
I have this deep desire for a red or purple super-sparkle, yet I gig so infrequently, it would be a total waste.

These are great strings, because you can basically play any style of music with them and they last longer than roundwounds. A word of caution, with my 5 String 55-94 you cannot thread the strings through the body. I even had one string
break at the ball end threading them through the bridge. My tech, did make sure that their were no burs or sharp edges inside the bridge holes before we tried the replacement string Ernie Ball sent. I think with your 4 String it's likely not
an issue since the scale is shorter.
Does anyone have an idea about how many 34” Scale 55-94’s Lakland possibly built in 1996 before they transitioned to the 35” Scale. In reality I’ve only seen pictures of a single red single Bass on Reverb.

I almost bought a very early SN red fretless 34” 54-94 about a year ago. Talked a lot about it with the owner. But, I had other things to pay for and someone more into fretless and 5 strings should have it. So, I passed.
I guess... it’s been a while, probably close to a year ago.
The sound of roundwounds with the benefits of flats.
My main players (Carlo, Laklands, Stingray Classic, and some of my personal builds) have tiny frets, so I like knowing that my strings aren’t eating them up.
