Certainly! Not questioning Lākland or their build practices at all. But, that body was cut with the intent of wearing a pickguard. BUT, there are pickup makers that can make a P pickup that has rectangular halves, so the route would be filled up. There’s also folks that make metal and plastic P pickup surrounds or rings - PBass Pickup rings.

Here’s examples of the two route types:

Thanks for the pic=1K words. I get it now :-) I am waiting for John to get back to me....I asked if my impression from the pic, in which it looks "dark brown with black highlighted grain" rather than "trans black" is correct or not. If it's truly trans black, I will favour tort; if dark brown/blk I may favour a blk 'guard.

Either way… bravo for using the 55 body shape for something truly unique!

This will be my 2nd alternative take on my fave body shape....the 1st one is my trans orange 54 JJ with Chi's, which I have posted before. I have flipped a lot of basses, but that custom Lakie and my 98 Fender J5 will be with me until my expiration date, and I suspect the same of the one currently "in the oven" :)

Huh, I’m actually surprised there’s two different p routes, but thanks for posting pics and making this a lot clearer.

You’re welcome. There’s also several different routes used for the Jazz neck pickup and at least 2 for the Stingray humbucker. Basically, (and I know this from my own routing experience) it is not easy or quick to route the hard corners and tiny curves seen on the typical Leo designed P, J, and MM pups. In fact, you can’t route the hard corners at all, you have to drill them and then try to meet the drill holes with a router bit. It’s a BIG headache for amateur garage builders like myself. So, you’ll see shortcuts taken, large rectangular routes with rounded corners, since the pickguard covers it nicely. Or, in extreme cases like some mass produced budget-friendly models, you’ll see routing like the J bass below.

John from Lakland has been exceptional throughout the custom order process. He explained that trans black is one of the most difficult finishes to pull off....apparently it's only about 40% transparent....so they stain the wood, re-sand it and stain it again to get the grain as visible as possible.
He said it looks grey/black in room light, but when you flash it the brown tone is a little visible. I haven't seen how dark the rw board is, so I decided to go with both a b/w/b 3-ply and extra tort' pg. He confirmed that JEDI is spot on in his assertion that no or transparent pg are not feasible options due to the rout. I cannot emphasize enough how friendly and professional he has been. In the end, considering the cost of a new USA Fender as a benchmark, this custom will provide not only a wonderful sibling to my 54-JJ, but also truly exceptional value.

My experience this far has been the same. As I gave him my harebrained ideas, I half-expected him to say "Dude, just no." But his first instinct has always been to try to make it happen.
