I know I may be getting ahead of myself with this question, but here goes. My 44-64 Custom fretless will be arriving Monday. I've never had a P/J before but from what I've read, the J soloed will get some hum. So I have a few questions.

1. Will the P pickup soloed also hum? I would assume not, being a split coil
2. If I want to get rid of the hum, do I just replace the J pickup with a hum cancelling J?
3. Has anyone here replaced the pickups on a 44-64 and if so, what do you recommend?

On my DJ-4 I replaced the pickups with a set of Nordstrand NJ4SV hum cancelling Jazz pickups and I love them. Could I just replace the J pickup with one Nordstand NJ4SV to quiet the bass?

If this is a PJ set of EMG GZRs in this 44-64, the J pickup is also a split coil so neither pickup will hum when soloed. If it’s not, then my guess is the J pickup may introduce some hum when soloed but the P will still be quiet as it is split coil.

I have a 44-64 PJ custom and it’s a fantastic bass.

To answer your question, the neopunch P soloed will be noise free like any P. It’s a good pickup with its own sound. Very hot when fully dimed, with a darker, low mid present tone. Could be rather unique on fretless. If you are looking for overdrive and grunt, you’ll like it. Subtle it is not. I felt it did the Allen Woody / Jorgen Carlsson overdrive sound rather naturally with a pick. However, I suspect with fretless you’ll want to bring the J to the party and that’s what led me to swap out the set. The J is not hot enough to compete. You won’t hear much until just before it’s dimed and solo you can hear some noise.

I lived with it stock for a while and did my fair share of hemming and hawing. I really liked the neopunch P solo but felt I wasn’t getting any of the in between settings dialing in the J. And when both were on full the volume drop was noticeable. Even lowering the P didn’t help much.

At first I was considering just replacing the J with a Fralin. But then I was worried about tonal match and I ultimately went with the Aguilar PJ set. I also considered the Nordstrand and Geezer sets. Reviews of the Geezer praise the P and pan the J. I couldn’t find the Nordstrand in stock at the time and to my ears the Aguilar set was comparable for a little less money. I also love Scott Devine’s F bass so I felt if Aguilar is good enough for F bass (and others) it would be a safe bet.

The Aguilar set made a big difference and matched the tone demos I heard online. My luthier even commented that the most noticeable differences were how perfectly balanced they are and the clarity. Zero noise and no volume drops. The P is very vintage and smooth, but responds when you dig in. It is slightly under wound but has those woody mids. I feel they express more dynamics than the neopunch. The J is silent and has the classic bark with a tad more brightness. Responds really well to the tone control. I get the benefit of all the subtle changes as you dial in the J. When both are on full with tone up it’s modern and bright. Dial tone back and there’s a world of tones. I’ve been happy with the swap and it’s my go to bass. The neck is so playable and now the pickups offer so much more that it covers anything I play until I need to reach for a 5 string. No regrets.

Thank you! Fantastic review of the Aguilar set and you addressed my other concern. I was wondering if I just replaced the J, how it would match up with the Lakland P pickup. Is replacing them as a set a better option? I thought of just going with the Fralin J. Nordstrand sells a matching P/J. The J would be the same NS4JV that I put in my DJ-4 and the P is the vintage P. I'll take a look at the Aguilar set.

As for the stock pickups, hmm, I am not looking for that overdriven sound. Was looking for more of a classic P tone. Will have to see when it gets here on Monday.

I searched the pickup forum extensively and didn’t find it overly helpful. A lot of the same people posting what they swear but not much to compare. I think pickups are just a crapshoot. You can get a sense for tone but won’t know until you install them in your bass.

For really consistent tone samples search YouTube for Maruszczyk Jake 4P. I found these most useful and my experience compares faithfully to his tone samples on the Aguilar. He has great demo videos with Aguilar, Nordstrand and other PJ pickups. There’s even a fretless with the Aguilar set you should check out. I found his videos to be the most useful references even with the 70s position for the J. There’s a video comparing the neopunch P to the Geezer too that might be helpful, but on the pickup forum people note the matching J is weak/unbalanced. Good luck. I can PM you links I’d you have trouble finding them.

Lakland Lined Fretless’s are the easiest playing and the best felling fretless I’ve ever played. Since I’m primarily a Double Bassist

I’m picky. :D
