My bet is they'd sound great. I will keep my eye out for another used 5501 for more science experiments :-)
The Lace site says these pups use 95% less copper wire and that replacing a pair of soapbars with alumitones can trim "up to 2 lbs" of weight....in my case there was about 1.5 lbs shaved by dropping the pups and preamp, and swapping the knobs and switch to aluminum as well (which was done for esthetics). The Lace pups are available in black or chrome finish and cost about the same as most quality pups.

Loving it! But I plan to go ahead and swap the stock pups and pre for some Bart MK5CBC pickups along with a Bart 5.2 A/P preamp.

Anyone here have experience with the MK5CBC pickups?

That's the exact setup that I had in my 55-01. I really regret selling it. It was a very tight sound in every way. It would get very aggressive when you dug into it and nice and mellow when you babied it. Soloing the bridge pup was finger style heaven, and soloing the neck pup and plucking towards was P Bass on steroids.

Yes, they were. The only issue was the length of the screws for the Barts. They were a little longer and required a bit more bore depth. They were also very brittle and the phillips head rounded off easily. I had some screws that came with a Duncan set that worked better and did not round off.

Fitting the preamp into that cavity is a tight fit. Watch to make sure that you don't have any thing touching, causing a short.

No, but that one had crossed my mind at one point. There will be no more - the addition of the last two 44 shaped bodies were meant as part of the "Trio of Death" which was an idea born after I got El Muerto (4-94). El Sonido de los Muertos (44-01) and Santa Muerte (4-63) are the final two. Need to take a family photo soon when it's not too sunny :D
